The Lumineers, 8:10 PM Folk trio from Colorado (QRO photos at a festival), The Lumineers (QRO live review) are known for their songs riddled with cello, mandolin, acoustic guitar, and charming vocals. Their songs are jauntily and nonabrasive tunes with a sing-along vibe (QRO live review). They return to touring (QRO photos at a ’22 festival) last year (QRO ’22 live review) in support of 2019’s III (QRO review), and now (QRO ’22 live review) return to Austin City Limits (QRO photos at a festival). |

Portugal. The Man, 4:10 PM – 5:10 PM (Weekend One) Raye, 4:10 PM – 5:10 PM (Weekend Two) Austin City Limits draws from very farther up north with Alaska/Portland’s Portugal. The Man (QRO photos at a festival). The rambling grunge outfit garnered new fans with 2007 sophomore release Church Mouth (QRO review), and its unhinged alt-rock (QRO live review), though slipped somewhat since then, even while finally playing Europe (QRO photos at a European festival) and becoming a festival favorite (QRO photos at a festival). Their major label debut In the Mountain In the Cloud (QRO review) was more psych-lite, but they still bring it live (QRO live review), and even went Down Under (QRO photos at a festival) after 2013’s release of follow-up Evil Friends (QRO review), hitting both the festival circuit (QRO photos at a 2013 festival) and live gigs (QRO 2013 live review). They come to their fifth ACL (QRO photos at Austin City Limits ’18), just after the release of Chris Black Changed My Life (QRO review), their follow-up to 2017’s hit Woodstock (QRO review), which had vaunted them in popularity (QRO photos at a 2018 festival) thanks to big, Grammy-winning hit, “Feel It Still”. |

Austin City Limits draws from very farther up north with Alaska/Portland’s Portugal. The Man (QRO photos at a festival). |

Kendrick Lamar, 8:40 PM Austin City Limits is headlined by the return of hip-hop hit Kendrick Lamar (QRO photos at a festival), who got notice with his 2010 mixtape, Overly Dedicated, and lived up to the hype (QRO photos at a festival) in 2012 with debut, good kid, m.A.A.d city – he’s got no “Fuckin’ Problems” (QRO video). He won a Grammy with 2015’s To Pimp a Butterfly – and followed that up that year with the even more acclaimed Damn, that not only won him another Grammy, was on like every best-of end-of-the-year list (QRO’s Top Albums of 2017), but also got that year’s Pulitzer Prize for Music, the first non-jazz or classical work to earn the accolade. After a hiatus, last year saw him top the charts again with Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, and now plays his third ACL (QRO photos at Austin City Limits ’16). |
|
Major Lazer, 6:10 PM – 7:00 PM The collaboration between DJ/producers Diplo (QRO photos at a festival) and Switch (QRO photos) made a serious breakthrough in 2009 as Major Lazer (QRO photos at a festival), with Guns Don’t Kill People. |

Shania Twain, 8:15 PM (Weekend One) The 1975, 8:15 PM (Weekend Two) One of the best-selling music artists of all time, Shania Twain (QRO ’23 live review) now graces Austin City Limits Music Festival. The “Queen of Country Pop” had more hits than you could count in the nineties and early aughts, before basically retiring due to illness. But nothing could keep Shania down, returning with everything from an autobiography to a Vegas residency. One of the greatest women to ever take up the microphone, she comes to ACL behind this year’s Queen of Me. Manchester’s The 1975 (QRO photos at a festival) turned heads with their Sex EP in 2012, even though it wasn’t very good (QRO review), they have kept that up (QRO photos at a festival) as the second coming of INXS with last year’s Being Funny In a Foreign Language. They come to Austin City Limits (QRO photos at a festival) after being in the news for other reasons (getting sued for frontman Matty Healy kissing a guy which closed down their Malaysian festival, not to mention him breaking up with Taylor Swift…). |
|
Thirty Seconds to Mars, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM It would have been easy for pretty boy actor Jared Leto to go the pretty boy actor route (literally played “Angelface” in 1999’s Fight Club, but don’t talk about Fight Club…), but he has done different things, like his Oscar-winning portrayal of a transgender woman in Dallas Buyers Club, to forming 30 Seconds to Mars (QRO live review) with guitarist Tomo Milićević and drummer/brother Shannon Leto. Of course, he only moved into the emo-heartthrob arena, hardly a huge jump, but of course has found huge success and huge crowds of fans (QRO photos). They play Austin City Limits (QRO photos at a festival) for somehow the first time, just after It’s the End of the World but It’s a Beautiful Day. It’s Morbin’ Time! (QRO photos at a festival) |

|
Chromeo, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM (Weekend One) Tegan & Sara, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM (Weekend Two) There are combos and then there are combos: Montreal’s Chromeo (QRO live review) are the electro-funk duo of Dave 1 (David Macklovitch) and P-Thugg (Patrick Gemayel) has been best friends since childhood (QRO live review), billing themselves as, “The only successful Arab/Jewish collaboration since the beginning of time” (but what is their stance on Québécois independence?…). And their electronica works outdoors (QRO photos outdoors), day or night (QRO live review), even at a festival (QRO photos at a festival). They come back to Austin City Limits (QRO photos at Austin City Limits ’14) for a third time (QRO photos at a festival) with their great show (QRO live review), off of 2019’s Head Over Heels (QRO review) and 2020’s absolutely awesome Quarantine Casanova (QRO review), because they wanna be your “Clorox Wipe” (QRO review). Identical twin sisters Tegan and Sara (QRO interview) Quinn emerged out of Calgary at a young age over two decades ago (QRO spotlight on), and are coming down to ACL (QRO photos at a festival) behind their tenth record, Crybaby (QRO review). 2016’s Love You To Death (QRO review) and 2013’s Heartthrob (QRO review) launched the indie duo (QRO live review) into electro-pop stardom (helped by contributing to Lego Movie’s awesome, Oscar-nominated song, “Everything Is Awesome!!!”), after a hiatus following the end of their touring behind 2009’s Sainthood (QRO review). They then tapped their high school era writings for 2019’s Hey, I’m Just Like You (QRO review), and now combine it all & more (QRO ’22 live review) – including the recent TV series High School, based on their own memoir! The duo manages to combine both their mature style and today’s indie-rock (QRO live review) – along with some great between song banter (QRO live review). They’ve been everywhere in the world (QRO photos at a festival on the other side of the world) – from French-speaking Montreal (QRO photos) to Major League Baseball’s ‘Fan Cave’ (QRO photos), from Amnesty International’s ‘Bring Human Rights Home’ event (QRO photos) with Pussy Riot to Middle America (QRO photos) to Village Voice Pride Awards (QRO recap). She’s been a consistent star for decades with other singles such as 1988’s “Strong Enough To Bend” and 1992’s “Two Sparrows in a Hurricane”, and in 2019 won the Grammy for Best Country Album with While I’m Livin’ and for Best Country Song with “Bring My Flowers Now”. Foo Fighters, 8:00 PM For some people, Dave Grohl will always be, first and foremost, the drummer of Nirvana, but he’s forged a massively successful career fronting his own Foo Fighters (QRO photos at a festival) for over twenty-five years now. Along with former Sunny Day Real Estate bassist Nate Mendel, Pat Smear (of iconic punk act The Germs), and Chris Shiflett (QRO photos at a festival), they’re up to record number eleven with this year’s But Here We Are (QRO review), 2021’s Medicine at Midnight (QRO review), 2017’s ambitious Concrete and Gold (QRO review), 2014’s Sonic Highways (QRO review), 2011’s Wasting Light (QRO review), and more. There has even been pseudo-Nirvana reunions, like Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and Nevermind producer Butch Vig on Wasting, plus Grohl’s documentary & album about their old recording studio, Sound City (QRO album review). Grohl even broke his leg on stage, finished the performance, and toured with his leg in a cast while sitting on a specially made throne. Last year, Foo drummer Taylor Hawkins tragically passed away, putting the band into forced hiatus. But they’ve returned this here with the cathartic But Here We Are, and now come back to headline ACL. |
|
Alanis Morissette, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM “Isn’t it ironic?” With that line and 1995’s Jagged Little Pill, Alanis Morissette became the musician that “You Oughta Know”, practically the poster girl for the wave of nineties indie-rock songstresses. No, nothing’s matched that since, but she’s kept busy in music & more, including appearing as God in Kevin Smith’s Dogma, starring in the Philip K. Dick adaptation Radio Free Albemuth, and voicing an imaginary version of herself on The Great North. She comes to ACL after not only celebrating the (delayed) 25th anniversary of Pill on tour, but also turning it into a Tony-nominated musical. |

They broke through with 2004’s Fever To Tell and hit single “Maps”, and while they’ve been sparing with their releases (2007’s Show Your Bones, 2010’s It’s Blitz! – QRO review – and 2013’s Mosquito – QRO review), they’ve stayed hot, mixing in dance-punk and electronica, and come back to ACL (QRO photos at a ’22 festival) behind last year’s highly anticipated Cool It Down (QRO review). They’re also one of the most fashionable (QRO photos) acts around in singer/frontwoman Karen O (QRO photos at a ’23 festival). |

They return to Austin City Limits Festival (QRO ’22 photos). How is it that France does such great atmospherics? M83 (QRO live review) actually exceeded countrymen Air with 2008’s Saturdays = Youth (QRO review) and 2011’s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming (QRO review), and come back to Austin City Limits Festival (QRO photos at Austin City Limits ’16) for a four time (QRO photos), now behind this year’s Fantasy (QRO review), which has led the band to bigger shows (QRO live review) and bigger stages (QRO ’23 photos) at bigger festivals (QRO photos at a festival) & more (QRO photos at a festival). |

Death Grips, 7:15 PM – 8:15 PM Alt-hip-hop has grown into experimental hip-hop, the next big thing in outfits like Sacramento’s Death Grips (QRO photos at a festival) and their wild stage show. It used to be that the big question is whether they’ll even show, as they were notorious for canceling shows (sometimes without notice), but since breaking up and reuniting (QRO photos at a festival), they’ve actually been playing shows, and come to Austin City Limits (QRO photos at a festival last month). |

The Breeders, 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM Back in the early nineties alt-boom, Kim Deal left Boston’s acclaimed Pixies to form her own band with her sister Kelley, The Breeders, and they had one of the biggest hits of the era with the classic Last Splash (QRO live review performing Last Splash). However, after that the band sputtered to a delayed disappointment record Title TK a decade later. But this is the twenty-first century, and everything is coming back. First Deal and Pixies frontman Black Francis buried the hatchet and reunited the old band, while Kim & Kelley reteamed up (QRO live review) to make Mountain Battles (QRO review) – which unfortunately was no Last Splash. So, Kim left the Pixies (again), recruited the entire old Splash crew and played the record on tour (QRO photos of them performing Last Splash at a festival). 2018 (QRO photos in 2018) saw the old band release the new All Nerve (QRO review) – and it was yet another disappointment. But hey, Last Splash still sounds great live (QRO photos of them performing it at another festival), and you’ll hear it (QRO live review on 30th anniversary tour of Last Splash) back at ACL (QRO photos at Austin City Limits ’18). |

The Walkmen, 3:15 PM – 4:15 PM (Weekend One) Del Water Gap, 3:15 PM – 4:15 PM (Weekend Two) The Brooklyn rock music scene of the aughts culminated in The Walkmen (QRO photos at a festival in Brooklyn). The band (QRO live review) grew from their more soused early days (QRO photos – which included a front-to-back cover of John Lennon & Harry Nilsson’s drunken weekend Pussy Cats – QRO review) to a sadder, but more accomplished act (QRO photos at a festival) by 2008’s You & Me (QRO review). Their live show (QRO live review) similarly evolved (QRO photos at a festival), if losing some of that early fun, but certainly gotten classier (QRO live review). But, even at festivals (QRO photos at a festival) or outdoors (QRO photos outdoors), they ranged nicely (QRO photos at a festival) from barstool rockers like oldies “The Rat” (QRO video) and “Thinking of a Dream I Had” (QRO video) plus the newer “The Blue Route” (QRO video) to sadder pint glass-raisers like older “Another One Goes By” (QRO video) and “Louisiana” (QRO video), plus the newer “On the Water” (QRO video) from 2010’s classy Lisbon (QRO review), made on site in Portugal (QRO live review in Europe). But a year after 2012’s Heaven (QRO review) and single “We Can’t Be Beat” (QRO review), the group went on hiatus, with various band members releasing solo work. Until this year, as the iconic Walkmen (QRO photos) are returning (QRO photos at a festival), with a series of shows in NYC (QRO live review from NYC ’23 reunion show) and further (QRO reunion photos in London), and then return to Austin City Limits (QRO photos at a festival). Brooklyn singer/songwriter Samuel Holden Jaffe comes to Austin City Limits as Del Water Gap (QRO photos) behind last year’s self-titled debut. |

Mumford & Sons, 8:30 PM London’s King’s College & St. Paul’s School are serving as something of the English alt-folk Wesleyan, seeing related acts hit it big. First there was Noah & The Whale, with graduates of both, then Noah’s female vocalist Laura Marling went out on her own. But the biggest hit from there has to be fellow Marling collaborator Mumford & Sons (QRO live review). Debut Sign No More saw them break through to the mainstream (QRO photos outdoors) with songs like “Little Lion Man”, and 2012’s follow-up Babel (QRO review) hit number one on the charts (QRO photos) on both sides of the Atlantic (QRO photos at a European festival). Oh, they’ve also done such feats as perform on the Grammys with Bob Dylan – and win album of the year in 2013! They also got a Grammy for their tour documentary Big Easy Express (QRO screening review), where they, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and Old Crow Medicine Show toured the southwest by train – a railroad version of their ‘Gentlemen of the Road Stopover’ tours (QRO review). And now Mumford & Sons (QRO live review) come back to Austin City Limits to headline (QRO photos at ’23 festival), after last year’s Delta (QRO review) and 2015’s Wilder Mind (QRO review), not to mention frontman Marcus Mumford’s recent solo work (QRO live review). |

Hozier, 6:15 PM – 7:15 PM Ireland’s Andrew Hozier-Byrne (QRO live review in England) comes back to Austin City Limits (QRO photos at a festival) off of Wasteland, Baby!, 2019’s follow-up to 2014’s massive breakthrough single “Take Me To the Church” – which had seen him being impersonated by Kate McKinnon on Saturday Night Live! |
|
Niall Horan, 4:15 PM – 5:15 PM Out of the massively successful boy band One Direction (which was created on The X Factor?!?), each singer has forged their own successful solo careers, such as Ireland’s Niall Horan (QRO photos at ’23 festival). He’s had three hit solo records, most recently this year’s The Show, and now brings that Show to Austin. |
