Lane - Everybody's Finding Out

An arch, angular intensity has taken up residency within Lane’s latest single, “Everybody’s Finding Out”. It’s the shortest track off an album, the forthcoming Receiver; an album that’s full of nothing but short tracks. It doesn’t take this Boston-based art-core outfit too long to get to the point.

The band shouts out their affinity with Television, which you hear a mile away in the texture of the guitars. Straight ahead; unfiltered; insistent; and ‘pure’ might be an odd way to describe anything in this degraded age, but, fuck it, you want to follow the letters and words where they lead your fingertips across the keyboard. There’s an old school Lower East Side flavor to this band, which somehow manages to weave more contemporary strains of neo-Krautrock and Western-appropriation of the Sahel sound into the mix.

Save the full pantheon of comparisons for when the album drops. For now, feast on a little Newer Wave single about dummies being dumb during the pandemic and breaking quarantine. Hate to say it, but if this is a morality tale, the culture-at-large might have already memory-holed the awful COVID-19 experiences that lend the pithy lyrics sneaky gravitas. The immuno-compromised be damned.

So much the worse for everyone, who suffer in obvious and less obvious ways when we gang-stomp the weakest among us. But geopolitics is never short of new genocides, in various shades and stripes, if people want to shake their morality maker. It’s just that they usually don’t.
