ASHRR - What's Been Turning You On

L.A.’s ASHRR have just released a new advance on their sophomore album. If in late January, we were presented with, arguably, the big hit in this record –  the incredible “Fizzy” (QRO review) – now we get a new short, warm and direct single, “What’s Been Turning You On”.

Whereas “Fizzy” had a set of lyrics that were kinda oneiric but ultimately wanted people to be optimistic in the face of everything that’s going on right now, in all aspects, “What’s Been Turning You On” basically does what’s on the tin.

“What’s Been Turning You On” is a new take on the band’s current approach of accessible, warm, infectious, solid pop that sees them follow the rabbit hole initiated by “Sunshine Low” and that is taking them to the heights and excellence of, for example, Khruangbin.

Mixing electronics, modern soul, little droplets of post-punk and a persistent disco vibe, the trio get in full nocturnal mode and explore the connection of two people. And the connection is not only spiritual.

Showing their usual elegance, they never fall for easy similes or suggestions, so the final result is catchy, sexy and sensual, all that accentuated by the keyboards of Josh Charles, the softly tense picking of Ethan Allen’s guitar and the assured yet silky delivery of vocalist Steven Davis.

And, again, this single has received the remix treatment. ASHRR’s label, 20/20 Vision Recordings, has released a twelve-inch with a remix by London-based producer System Olympia, adding another rework by the band under the moniker ASHRR Soundsystem.

A couple more tracks are expected to be released during April 2024, so keep checking this space to be updated!
