The Hussy : Live
The Hussy

Friday night, March 30th, on the fringes of Bushwick, Brooklyn, the relatively new venue The Archeron nearly burned to the ground.  Well, that might be a slight exaggeration.  Let’s say that if it weren’t for the concrete floors The Hussy could have started a Great White incident thanks to a stray bottle of lighter fluid.  Bobby jumped off stage to finish out the last song from his set, then pulled out the bottle to soak his guitar and, of course, lit a match.  In the burning Hendrix moment an unhelpful audience member tried to put out the mini bonfire with a beer, and managed to spread the flames instead.

The HussyYou might be asking yourself does it make a lot of sense to be setting your equipment on fire in the middle of a tour?  The Hussy aren’t planning ahead; they can’t be worried about rocking too hard.  They figured that they had one night to make an impression on New York, and they took it.  It may have had something to do with openers, Foster Care and Pampers, who set the tone for this kind of hardcore mayhem with equally chaotic punk sets, but I think it’s safe to say no one expected this kind of send off in front of the cramped stage.

It’s been a year since Bobby and Heather made their way East from Madison, WI to play Brooklyn, this time in support of their second album, Weed Seizure, on Tic Tac Totally Records.  Taking the stage, Bobby made sure to layer the duct tape over his pedals because as soon as they launched into the first song, "Wrong/Right", he was bouncing off the wall behind him, falling to his knees, just trying to keep up with where his guitar was trying to go, pounding out the frenzied chords.  Heather is the all important other half of this wailing garage duo, and she set up facing Bobby to beat out their typically crash heavy tom rhythms.  Barely pausing to thank everyone, they dove into the scuzzy distorted melody of "Liar", the crowd getting sweatier by the second.  The Hussy are one of the most solid duos, finishing each others backing melodies, trading off lead duties throughout the set.  Perfectly in unison, a track like "Dog Says Yeah", ties all of their ‘50s reverb surf roots solidly to the dirty grease stained garage in an unbelievably energetic live show which ended unpredictably in flames… but thankfully, the sound guy stepped in with a fire extinguisher.

The Hussy managed to make it over to WFMU for a live set the next morning where fire codes and studio carpeting probably prevented them from trying this again, but you can find out for yourself as their extensive tour schedule is currently taking them West across the U.S. and down the West Coast until June.
