The word on SECRETWARS for the longest time was: "Oh, I’m holed up in my #beatzlab with a paper & a pen, churning out this massive assault on contemporary conventions and public decorum, which I’m nicknaming the motherfucking Double Fantasy Vacation." Sure enough, the dubble-trubble album dropped earlier this year somewhere deep in the heart of an Illinois Chuckie Cheese. Strange vibes, long-arc vibes, minimalist-ambient vibes that offered you acid in dark alleys.
Killer material. QRO thought that was the final statement on Vacations, et al. — but then word came down from some gilted cloud that SECRETWARS was repackaging the entire dubble-trubble shebang into a tighter, more mainstream EP. Good stuff, spoon full o’ sugar.
But lo and behold, the EP drops — Tropical Depression — and the spillover from the double album amounts to…..nada. That’s right. Entirely new album, an enormous entirely new album, which builds off the wide open expanse of Double Fantasy Vacation into the tighter confines of the EP like a red, ragtop convertible tearing through Barstow at a 100 MPH with a head full of acid to make the Minto 400 press check-in before the open bar closes.
Kinda blown away by this EP. I streamed "Bordeaux Transit" first up below (also, ROBOTS) because it reminds me of a certain Aphex Twin song I adore. SECRETWARS has taken it to the next level on this album, ratcheting up the ambient to another grade of pop, krautrock, electro kibbutzing. Very solid.
