After just finishing a nationwide tour with Alexi Murdoch, LA-based Midnight Movies will be at SXSW, and afterwards, perform at several shows with Blonde Redhead. QRO recently chatted with guitarist Larry Schemel and got a quick preview of the album and what it was like making it.
QRO: What can we expect your new album, Lion The Girl, to be like?
LS: It’s a more dynamic album than the first. There is more energy, more guitars, and the vocals are more powerful. We still retain all the electronic elements and moody psychedelics from the first album but have taken the songwriting to a higher level.
QRO: What was recording like this time?
LS: The recording was done at Robert Lang studios in Seattle, WA and mixed at our producer Steve Fisk’s house in Seattle, it took about 5 weeks total and was a great experience.
QRO: Which songs on Lion The Girl excite you the most?
LS: Everyone has there own favorites on the record, I guess I would say "Lion Song", "Bell Tower" and "24 Hour Dream"… but it always changes.
QRO: What was the most popular food in the studio?
LS: The most popular food in the studio was whatever Gena (vocals, organ) was cooking. Gena is an awesome cook and whenever she had a chance to cook for us it was always good.
QRO: What was it like touring with Alexi Murdoch?
LS: Touring with Alexi Murdoch was alot of fun, he’s really cool, has a very strong following and was selling out all the gigs. It was great to play for a lot of people who were not familiar with us.
QRO: What’s the latest mp3 you’ve downloaded?
LS: The latest mp3 I downloaded was a song by a new L.A. band called Residual Echoes, good stuff!
QRO: Do you play video games? Xbox 360? PS3? Wii?
LS: Video games? Actually, we’re more into pinball. "Pinbot" is a classic!
