Lollapalooza 2015 Preview

Lollapalooza is one of the biggest music festivals in the world – and also one of the best. It deftly combines mass appeal with cutting edge – and so many stages & so many acts that it’s hard to know which way to turn. It returns to Chicago’s Grant Park, Friday-to-Sunday, July 31st to August 2nd:

FRIDAY, JULY 31st

Bud Light Stage The Weeknd, 8:30 PM – 10:00 PM Check out Canada’s own alt-hip-hop star, The Weeknd (QRO photos at a festival), who comes back to Lollapalooza in the run-up to the release of his highly anticipated sophomore record, Chapter III.
alt-J, 6:30 PM – 7:45 PM Among all the overnight alt-successes, maybe no one has done it as quickly or as majorly as alt-J (QRO live review). Also known as ‘∆’ – that’s what you get when press the ‘alt’ and ‘J’ buttons on your keyboard – the indie-more quartet went from playing tiny places at terrible hours in 2012 (QRO photos) to winning their native England’s prestigious Mercury Prize later that year (QRO photos at a U.K. festival), and playing America (QRO photos at a North American festival) at much, much larger spaces (QRO photos), including Lollapalooza ’13.
Hot Chip, 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM Maybe the first band to hit it big in this century/millennium’s electronic indie-dance scene was LCD Soundsystem (QRO live review) – but the second was close friend Hot Chip (QRO photos). The Warning and “Over and Over” lifted the band (QRO photos) to the big time in 2006, and they’ve kept it going (QRO live review) with Made In the Dark (QRO review), One Life Stand (QRO review), and 2012’s In Our Heads. They come back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) for a third time behind their latest, Why Make Sense?.
St. Paul & The Broken Bones, 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM From Birmingham, Alabama, St. Paul & The Broken Bones bring the true southern soul.

Palladia Stage Big Once & Trentino, 7:45 PM – 8:30 PM Big Once & Trentino team up to close out the Palladia Stage on Friday.
The War On Drugs, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM Claimed to be “Best New Music” by Pitchfork for their 2011 album, Slave Ambient, The War On Drugs are often known for the jauntily confections of atmospheric guitars and rolling drums (QRO live review). The Philly outfit (QRO photos) later saw member Kurt Vile spin-off for his own successful career (QRO live review), and followed up Slave with last year’s Lost In the Dream (QRO mp3 review).
Father John Misty, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM While a member of overrated folk outfit Fleet Foxes (QRO album review), guitarist Joshua Tillman found time to do his own solo stuff (QRO album review), but in 2012 he moved to solo full-time as Father John Misty (QRO photos) with Fear Fun, and comes back to Lollapalooza behind follow-up I Love You, Honeybear.

Pepsi Stage Flying Lotus, 9:00 PM – 10:00 PM While Flying Lotus (QRO photos outdoors) might be best known for making the music in Adult Swim’s bumpers (that text right before a show on the cable channel), he’s also an accomplished producer, as well as making & playing music in his own right (QRO live review) – not to mention his alter ego, Sealab 2021-inspired Captain Murphy.
Sylvan Esso, 7:45 PM – 8:30 PM Durham, North Carolina indie-pop duo Sylvan Esso (QRO photos outdoors) have moved up very fast since the release last year of their eponymous debut full-length.
First Aid Kit, 6:30 PM – 7:15 PM Sweden’s woods-y sister act First Aid Kit (QRO live review) come back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) behind last year’s Stay Gold (QRO review), their follow-up to 2012’s The Lion’s Roar (QRO review).
Philip Selway, 5:15 PM – 6:00 PM Though clearly best known as playing drums in a little act called Radiohead (QRO live review), Philip Selway comes to Lollapalooza behind his second solo record, last year’s Weatherhouse.
BROODS, 4:00 PM – 4:45 PM New Zealand brother-and-sister duo BROODS (QRO photos at a festival) come to Lollapalooza off of last year’s debut full-length, Evergreen.
BADBADNOTGOOD, 2:50 PM – 3:30 PM The Toronto trio BADBADNOTGOOD (QRO photos at a Toronto festival) are known for incorporating hip-hop into their music, and have collaborated with the Odd Future (QRO live review) likes of Tyler, the Creator (see below) and Frank Ocean, and most recently the one-and-only Ghostface Killah (QRO photos together at a festival) with Sour Soul.

Perry’s Stage Kaskade, 8:30 PM – 9:45 PM Ryan Raddon’s origins, which include a two-year mission in Japan for the Mormon Church, might sound more apropos for a country musician in Louisiana, but he’s become a top electronic performer worldwide, and is playing Lollapalooza for his fourth time.
Dillon Francis, 7:00 PM – 8:15 PM American electronic artist Dillon Francis (QRO photos at a festival) has worked with big name DJs like Calvin Harris (QRO album review) and Diplo (QRO photos).
DJ Snake, 5:45 PM – 6:45 PM France’s trip-hop producer DJ Snake comes to Lollapalooza off of working last year with Diplo (QRO photos) and touring with Skrillex (QRO photos at a festival).
DJ Mustard, 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM The official DJ to Compton’s YG (QRO photos at a festival), DJ Mustard has produced such hits as 2 Chainz’ “I’m Different”, Kid Ink’s “Show Me”, and more.

Sprint Stage Gary Clark Jr., 6:45 PM – 7:45 PM Austin’s Gary Clark Jr. (QRO photos at a festival in Austin) is the latest artist to be said to be ‘bringing blues back’ – when did it ever leave? And if it did, it’s surely come back many times since then (just look at Jack White…) – but Clark (QRO live review) is certainly keeping it going, like on Austin City Limits (QRO live review on ACL) and at Lollapalooza ’12.
MS MR, 4:45 PM – 5:45 PM New York electro-rock duo MS MR (QRO photos) comes to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) just after the release of sophomore full-length How Does It Feel.
Tove Lo, 3:00 PM – 3:45 PM Out of Stockholm, Ebba Tove Lesa Nilsson – a.k.a. Tove Lo (QRO photos at a festival) – has written for numerous other artists like Icona Pop (QRO spotlight on), Ellie Goulding (QRO live review), and Hilary Duff, but 2013 hit single “Habits” has made her a leading lady all of her own (QRO photos at a festival).

Samsung Galaxy Stage Paul McCartney, 7:45 PM – 10:00 PM Do you need to be told who Paul McCartney (QRO photos) is? Seriously? In addition to birthing the hilarious “Who the fuck is Paul McCartney” meme, Sir Paul just might be the biggest living music star on the planet (QRO photos). He was a Beatle, for Christ’s sake – and not Ringo (QRO live review). He had a successful second career in the seventies in Wings, and has kept going and going (QRO photos) – long past age sixty-four (that vegetarian lifestyle has done something…). He has even released new records, most recently with 2013’s New (though let’s forget about the prior year’s collection of standards, Kisses On the Bottom – QRO review). Live, the ageless wonder (QRO photos) plays from his entire discography, “Band On the Run” to “The End” – so just “Let It Be”.
Alabama Shakes, 5:45 PM – 6:45 PM Actually from Alabama, throwback rock ‘n’ rollahs Alabama Shakes (QRO photos at a festival) are well loved from their numerous, energetic live shows (QRO photos), which got them a slew of Grammy nominations in 2013, and a well-earned spot on the festival circuit (QRO photos at a festival) – and now make up their weather-cancelled Lollapalooza ’12 non-appearance.
Cold War Kids, 3:45 PM – 4:45 PM After a string of EPs, Fullerton, California’s Cold War Kids (QRO photos) blew up in 2006 with their full-length debut, Robbers & Cowards. While 2008’s Loyalty to Loyalty (QRO review) suffered something of a sophomore slump, 2011’s Mine Is Yours (QRO review) 2013’s Miss Lonelyhearts (QRO review), and last year’s Hold My Home (QRO review), lifted things somewhat, and their live show (QRO live review) is still electric, especially outside (QRO live review outdoors) or at festivals (QRO photos at a festival), as they still ring with singles (QRO photos), from the more recent “Mine Is Yours” and “Audience” (QRO video) to their break-outs “We Used To Vacation”, “Hospital Beds” (QRO video), and “Hang Me Out To Dry” (QRO video). They play Lollapalooza for a fifth time.

He’s also, randomly, third cousin of Lily Allen.
Kid Cudi, 6:45 PM – 8:00 PM Kicking out the beats at Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) for a third time will be Kid Cudi (QRO photos outdoors), who’s work with GOOD Music labelmates like Kanye West, Common, and David Guetta (QRO album review), and earned major plaudits for his live show (QRO live review) & records like 2010’s Man On the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager (QRO review).
The Tallest Man On Earth, 4:45 PM – 5:45 PM There are a lot of alt-folk solo singer/songwriters out there these days. Sweden’s Kristian Matsson (QRO photos at a festival), a.k.a. The Tallest Man On Earth (QRO photos at a festival), first got notice for his Dylan-esque ways (QRO photos) when opening for fellow alt-folk solo singer/songwriter Justin Vernon, a.k.a. Bon Iver (QRO live review), but has since graduated to headliner (QRO photos as headliner) – and still operates solo (QRO photos), like at Lollapalooza ’12 and other festivals (QRO photos at a festival).
Sturgill Simpson, 2:45 PM – 3:45 PM Though his sound is closer to traditional country, because Sturgill Simpson (QRO photos at a festival) operates his own label outside of the Nashville country music business, he’s labeled ‘alt-country’. Also: HOLYCHILD, 1:00 PM – 1:45 PM
Palladia Stage Light Em Up, 8:00 PM – 8:45 PM Light Em Up close out the Palladia Stage on Saturday.
Tyler, the Creator, 5:45 PM – 6:45 PM Lollapalooza flirts with awesomeness and danger by booking the infamous Tyler, the Creator. In addition to fronting the ultra-chaotic Odd Future (QRO live review) collective, he’s released two solo studio albums of his own, 2012’s Goblin (QRO review) and 2015’s Wolf (QRO review).
Toro Y Moi, 3:45 PM – 4:45 PM One of the ‘big names’ in ‘chillwave’, Chazwick Bundick – a.k.a. Toro y Moi (QRO photos) – had one of the new genre’s touchstone records in 2011 in Causers of This (QRO review), but has since moved to a more rock-oriented sound, especially live (QRO photos). He comes back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos) behind this year’s What For?, following 2013’s Anything In Return (QRO review).

Walk the Moon, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM In their self-titled album, Walk the Moon (QRO review), these Ohio natives (QRO live review) became one of America’s infectious indie rock groups (QRO photos at a festival) and it’s easy to see why: their catchy guitar riffs, fun and creamy pop beats can strike a tune within any listener (QRO photos at a festival). In 2012, the band (QRO photos) had the ‘song of the summer’ in “Anna Sun”, but they’re more than just that great single (QRO photos), and come back to Lollapalooza behind last December’s follow-up full-length, Talking Is Hard (QRO review).
Charli XCX, 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM Charlotte Aitchison, under the moniker Charli XCX (QRO photos at a festival), is one of Britain’s most elusive dark pop songstresses (QRO photos at a festival). Already after opening slots on big-name tours as well as festivals (QRO photos at a festival), not to mention co-writing the breakthrough song for Icona Pop (QRO spotlight on), “I Love It”, she started to solidify her career as a pop songwriter to be reckoned with (QRO photos), with 2013 seeing her release her debut full-length, True Romance, and playing her own headlining gigs (QRO photos). Last year she achieved her own breakthrough single, “Break the Rules”, on sophomore full-length Sucker.

Samsung Galaxy Stage Metallica, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM The definition of heavy metal and the most successful band in the genre, Metallica (QRO live review) are pure headliner. The band that has given us …And Justice For All, the blackest album cover since Spinal Tap, St. Anger documentary (and… Lulu – QRO review), and split ears worldwide (QRO photos) closes Saturday at Lollapalooza, their first time at the festival in almost twenty years!
Tame Impala, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM From Perth (QRO photos at a home) in Western Australia (QRO photos at a hometown festival), comes the psychedelic rock of Tame Impala (QRO live review), touring off of 2011’s Innerspeaker (QRO review) & 2012’s Lonerism, whose critical acclaim has won them fans across the world (QRO photos at a festival), and a spot back at Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival).
Death From Above 1979, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM For an act that only broke up five years ago, Death From Above 1979’s reunion is actually one of the most anticipated (QRO photos at a festival). It helps that the duo of Jesse F. Keeler (who’s been in MSTRKRFT since the break-up) and Sebastien Grainger (who had his own solo career after the break-up – QRO album review) basically invented the dance-punk/noise-rock scene. Their initial reunion gig at South-by-Southwest in Austin in 2011 (QRO recap) was so mobbed that policemen came in on horses and used mace – won’t be that nuts when they return to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival), but expect a wild time (QRO photos at a festival) as the band tours (QRO live review) behind their self-titled reunion record (QRO review).
Django Django, 2:15 PM – 3:00 PM London art-rock outfit Django Django (QRO live review) went from a new nobody to critical acclaim at lightning speed (QRO live review) with their 2012 self-titled record, and now return behind follow-up Born Under Saturn.
Catfish & The Bottlemen, 12:45 PM – 1:30 PM North Wales’ young Catfish & The Bottlemen (QRO photos) played seemingly a million festivals last summer, and now come to Lollapalooza.

A$AP Rocky, 6:45 PM – 7:45 PM Lollapalooza has always had the beats & rhymes, such as this year with A$AP Rocky (QRO photos at a festival), of the acclaimed A$AP Mob – so expect shouts for schwag (QRO photos at a festival) as he plays off this year’s At.Long.Last.A$AP.
ODESZA, 4:45 PM – 5:45 PM Harrison Mills & Clayton Knight managed to put out their debut as electronic duo ODESZA (QRO photos) while still in their senior year back in ’12 with Summer’s Gone, and come to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) off of last year’s follow-up full-length, In Return.
MOON TAXI, 2:45 PM – 3:45 PM MOON TAXI (QRO photos at a festival) cross the dashed lines between indie, jam, progressive, and rock. They’re one of many Lollapalooza ’12 alum to play this year.
Night Terrors of 1927, 1:00 PM – 1:45 PM Jarrod Gorbel (QRO interview) of The Honorary Title and Blake Sennett of Rilo Kiley (QRO album review) formed Night Terrors of 1927 (QRO spotlight on) with this year’s debut, Everything’s Coming Up Roses (QRO review).
Palladia Stage NGHTMRE, 7:45 PM – 8:30 PM DJ NGHTMRE closes out the Palladia Stage.
Gogol Bordello, 5:45 PM – 6:45 PM From Eastern Europe & elsewhere, through the Lower East Side comes ‘gypsy punks’ Gogol Bordello (QRO live review). The many, many-person outfit is fronted by singer/guitarist Eugene Hutz (also of the film version of Everything Is Illuminated), but there’s so much going on on-stage, you won’t know where to look (QRO photos outdoors). The band followed up debut Underdog World Strike with the not-quite-as-impressive Super Taranta! (QRO review) in 2007, and even less so with 2010’s Trans-Continental Hustle (QRO review), but were revived in 2013 on Pure Vida Conspiracy (QRO review) – and the band still brings it live (QRO live review), including at festivals (QRO photos at a festival), like Lollapalooza ’08 & ’10.
Angus & Julia Stone, 3:45 PM – 4:45 PM Australia’s been bringing a surprising number of up-and-coming artists, often coming to the wider world through the mother country, Great Britain. One of those acts is the brother-sister indie-folk duo Angus & Julia Stone (QRO photos), from the northern beaches of Sydney down under, who come to Lollapalooza after last year’s self-titled record.
Shakey Graves, 1:45 PM – 2:45 PM Shakey Graves (QRO photos at a festival) is the post-folk alter ego of Austin’s Alejandro Rose-Garcia (QRO photos). Also: Sheppard, 12:15 PM – 1:00 PM
Pepsi Stage Kygo, 9:00 PM – 10:00 PM Norwegian DJ & producer Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll closes out Pepsi Stage at Kygo.
FKA Twigs, 7:45 PM – 8:30 PM Tahliah Barnett (QRO photos) has pulled off the rare feat of moving from dancer to musician, as in-demand FKA Twigs (QRO photos at a festival), with a killer live show (QRO live review).
Albert Hammond Jr., 6:30 PM – 7:15 PM You probably still know Albert Hammond, Jr. from his day job as guitarist for this century/millennium’s first hit alt-rock band, The Strokes (QRO album review), but he’s also forged his own successful solo career (QRO photos solo at a festival), most recently 2013’s AHJ EP.
Wild Belle, 5:15 PM – 6:00 PM Brother-sister outfit Wild Belle (QRO spotlight on) grew up in Chicago but moved out to – where else? – Brooklyn (QRO photos in NYC). Big brother Elliot Bergmann formed NOMO, but has since teamed up with little sis Natalie (QRO photos). Sprint Stage TV On the Radio, 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM One of the bands that put Brooklyn not only on the indie-map, but also at the top of it, is the borough’s TV On the Radio (QRO live review outdoors in Brooklyn). 2004’s debut Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes introduced their complex-yet-accessible indie-tech-punk-rock, 2006’s Return to Cookie Mountain proved it was no fluke, and 2008’s Dear Science (QRO review) saw the band launched into the top tier of alternative music (QRO live review). The group took something of a break after that, as members such as Tunde Adebimpe, David Andrew Sitek, and Kyp Malone did various side/solo projects, but returned in 2013 (QRO photos at a festival) with Nine Types of Light (QRO review). Nine Types was a return in quality as well as success for the band (QRO photos at a festival), though they unfortunately lost bassist Gerard Smith to cancer in 2011, but have kept on magnificently (QRO photos outdoors in New York), including at festivals (QRO photos at a festival) and with last year’s Seeds (QRO review).
Lord Huron, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM Los Angeles label IAMSOUND is best known for electronic acts, but found a nice local indie-folk act in Lord Huron (QRO photos in Los Angeles), who is also a festival regular (QRO photos at a festival), like at Lollapalooza ’11.
Marina & The Diamonds, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM Great Britain has been putting out accomplished, interesting pop songstresses at an incredible rate, such as Adele (QRO live review), Ellie Goulding (QRO live review), and the woman who came in second to Goulding in the BBC ‘Sound of 2010’ poll, Marina Diamandis (QRO photos) – or Marina & The Diamonds (QRO photos at a festival), who comes to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) as part of her big U.S. tour (QRO photos in U.S.).
Twin Peaks, 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM Of course there’s a band named Twin Peaks (QRO photos at a festival) – even before the recent announcement of new episodes. Their power-pop and wild stage antics bring to mind The Replacements (QRO album review).
The Wombats, 12:00 PM – 12:45 PM There are some acts that you can’t help but enjoy, and Liverpool’s The Wombats (QRO spotlight on) are one. The infectious electric sound of 2007 debut A Guide To Love, Lose & Desperation and songs such as “Moving To New York” (QRO video) and “Here Comes the Anxiety” (QRO video) was followed-up nicely in 2011 with This Modern Glitch (QRO review), and songs like “Techno Fan” (QRO video) and “Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves)” (QRO video). And this year The Wombats (QRO interview) have returned with Glitterbug (QRO review) and pieces such as “This Is Not a Party” (QRO video) and “Emoticons” (QRO video).
Samsung Galaxy Stage Florence & The Machine, 8:30 PM – 10:00 PM Known for her yearning vocals and crooning howls (QRO photos), Florence & The Machine (QRO live review) have garnered the reputation of the world’s most renowned indie pop artists (QRO photos). However, their singles “Shake It Out” and “You’ve Got The Love” from 2011’s Ceremonials (QRO review) are only a short glimpse of her haunting soundscape (QRO photos). The group (QRO live review) will come back to Lollapalooza (QRO photos at a festival) after the release of follow-up How Big How Blue How Beautiful (QRO review).
Of Monsters and Men, 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM Things moved quite fast in 2011 for Iceland’s the next-gen alt-folk collective Of Monsters and Men (QRO live review), on the back of killer single “Little Talks” (QRO video) and debut full-length My Head Is an Animal (QRO review). In addition to ruling the festival circuit (QRO photos at a festival) and headlining bigger & bigger venues (QRO photos), they even played Saturday Night Live (QRO Music on Late Night TV).
