If you’ve been listening to an indie artist for a long time, they can become like an old friend. Maybe you’re not as excitedly into them as when you first heard them (and you were young), but you’re still always happy to get some new music from them. Such is the case with Elizabeth Powell, a.k.a. Land of Talk, even as she delves into synths on her latest, Performances.
Hardly alone in the alt-world (or musical world in general) in shifting from guitars to synthesizers, Powell still brings her intimate, lived-in emotion to songs such as “Your Beautiful Self”, “Rainbow Protection”, and “Sitcom”. If you wanted a bit more of that, a bit less of her instrumental synth tracks (there are four of them, although two are under a minute), so be it. She’s still your old friend Lizzie.
So, whether you miss the six-strings or love the keys, it’s just great to hear Land of Talk again, with their latest Performances.
