Fun Fun Fun Fest is one of the highest quality and most diverse festivals Austin has to offer. With four different stages featuring metal, hip-hop, indie, comedy, and more, FFF proved its fun factor for the 8th year in a row, Friday to Sunday, November 8th to 10th.

FFF transformed Auditorium Shores, a park just south of downtown Austin, into a playground for people of all walks of life. For three days, the festival used Austin’s skyline as its backdrop for concerts that brought the city and its concertgoers to life.

The stages pumped music and comedy of limitless variations throughout the park, making this a one-of-a-kind festival, a convivencia of sorts, that gave music lovers a place to experience old and new artists and genres that they may have not necessarily leaned towards before seeing them live. Where else can you go from watching Big Freedia’s booty poppin’ dancers to catching Bill Calahan’s songwriting genius pour out under a tent all in a day’s non-work? Or go from seeing Philly’s Kurt Vile on Friday, then the pop-indie Geographer on Saturday, and capping the weekend off with Slayer on Sunday?

Boasting over a hundred bands, artists, and comedians, the festival included many other highlights. Washed Out played much of their newest album, Paracosm (QRO review), but treated the audience to older favorites. The Polyphonic Spree were a delight per usual with a robed choir, cello, and concert harp on stage. And MGMT proved their live set holds as much energy as their recordings, playing old and new hits, backed by colorful computer graphic projections.

In between sets, festivalgoers could spend their downtime watching skaters and BMXers perform stunts, eating at one of the many local food trucks and vendors, or slammin’ a Shiner in an original FFF can.
