The Dears : Lovers RockThis might not be the right time for The Dears’ hopeful grandeur – or exactly the right time.  The Montreal group bring a light with them wherever they go, particularly in the darkness.  On their latest record, Lovers Rock, they touch upon both the happy and the sad.

Lovers Rock actually isn’t as epic as prior Dears releases, more interested in the intimate fate of lovers in these trying times (these very trying times).  Opener “Heart of an Animal” is an indie-rock meditation life, while the following “I Know What You’re Thinking and It’s Awful” has powerful emotion without being overdone.  There is the tragic like the too appropriate “Instant Nightmare!”, the wistful “Is This What You Really Want”, and lost in the darkness “Stille Lost”, but also sweetness on the chill relax “Play Dead” and even hope with “The Worst in Us” & the growing closer “We’ll Go Into Hiding”.

Without live shows The Dears unfortunately can’t engage their fans in the ways their communal concerts can, but they still can be found, on Lovers Rock.
