In 2012, Delta Spirit made their name as one of the best young rock groups out these days there with their self-titled album (QRO review), and two years later followed it up with the equally as good Into the Wide (QRO review). But then frontman Matthew Vasquez went the solo route for three records that just weren’t as good. Now Delta Spirit return – and are once again as great as ever with What Is There.
Delta Spirit not only do country-rock very well, but do so much more with it. There opener “The Pressure” literally brings pressure to the sound, while the funky backbeat to the following “It Ain’t Easy” makes it original & enjoyable. There’s the slow, soft, sweet, sad “Just the Same”, and before that the growing into hopeful glow “Lover’s Heart”. “Making Sense” is an evening drive by the dashboard lights, while “How Bout It” is a dark storm like a prestige television drama.
Also known for their wild shows, hopefully Delta Spirit can get back on the road soon. Because this is a great rock band in a world that truly needs great rock bands.
