Franz Ferdinand’s dance & charming nature made them something of an outlier when they broke through twenty odd years ago, but the rest of the world has caught up. Now, it is their ability to leaven that dance & charm with darkness, whether wry or straight-up, that makes them standout with The Human Fear.
Even with that title, Fear is not an outright fearful record, instead the alt-dance that Franz Ferdinand has employed ever since they took you out. But it’s not all just shine, despite there still being shine. “The Doctor” might have great up-synth activity, but there’s also a sly undercurrent that singer/frontman Alex Kapranos does so well. He even gets to go near cabaret on “Black Eyelashes”, while also bringing the band’s more familiar dance-procession to the likes of “Build It Up” and closer “The Birds”.
Many feel that these are not good times, yet still want to feel some good times, and Franz Ferdinand has made music for this Human Fear.
