This body is still vibrating from the British duo Simian Mobile Disco’s live set at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, OR on December 2nd. The brilliant light show accompanying their progressive, truly ‘live-set’ journey lit the room ablaze and the Sunday night crowd responded likewise. James Ford and James Anthony Shaw bring half of their studio on the road with them to create, improvise and remix versions of their songs on the spot. The modular synth, the large box with all of the wires, Shaw manipulated during the show apparently has a mind of it’s own; so it’s guaranteed that nothing will ever be the same during a live set. Theirs is a complex dance as they move around what seems to be something from a Dr. Who episode rather than a live music event. Of course, recognizable songs like “I Believe” resonated cheers and response from the crowd, but surprisingly everyone seemed just as connected with the slower, darker bits of the adventure.
For anyone who says they don’t like electronic music, they might be pleasantly surprised with the rustic, analog sounds of Simian Mobile Disco. For those who do, you might want to add witnessing SMD’s live performance to your to-do list.
