I wandered into a Sean Nicholas Savage set by accident on a trip to Toronto. The Montreal-based, blonde, mustachioed glam disco phenom was playing a gig at the Garrison (thanks to Dorice Tepley for sniffing that one out!) and I knew almost immediately the kid was something special. A natural performer. He plugged in what I think was an iPod into the PA and just let loose a solo set on top of the backing tracks. Sweet sentiments, love songs, slo-disco beats, hip sway: against the swirling psychadelic backdrop the night felt like a time trip to the mid 70s club scene when the stony 60s finally gave up the ghost for synthetic drugs and synthetic beats(while still holding on to the"turned on" groove). If you have a chance to see Mr. Savage in concert, don’t pass it up. Guaranteed it will be a memorable performance.
My hoser Canadian host came through the very next night with a house party find where Mr. Savage was doing it up in more intimate (and jam-packed) quarters. Good find, Dorice! Bought the vinyl of Mutual Feelings (pictured at right) and danced my ass off. Whatever reputation disco has these days, in the beginning it was a new, fresh, invigorating essay into new musical territory, and this album puts a hard-and-fast post-modern spin on what’s best in disco that will put a smile on your face and a nickel in your oyster.
