Sheffield’s Foundry filled up with Ride fans for their Thursday, April 21st show as part of their 30th anniversary tour of Nowhere. As the lights filled the room, the band entered the stage and created a space full of nostalgia. The past inside the present. The band were tight and the songs were like portals to the past for long-standing fans. In the packed out student union setting you could see Ride have a large fan base of old and new admirers.
The set kicked off with songs from Nowhere, starting with “Seagull”, then into “Kaleidoscope” and “In a Different Place”. “Vapour Trail” coming in midway into the set list was a beautiful lift to the evening. And very well received.
Second part of the set left us with a blend of their second album Going Blank Again, mixed with tracks from their twenty-first century reunion records Weather Diaries (QRO review) and This Is Not a Safe Place (QRO review). “Lannoy Point” 2017’s Weather Diaries was a favourite.
When the band left the stage, it was obvious everyone wanted an encore. They actually came back and played even more tunes!
Big shout out to bdrmm, special guests picked to support Ride at Foundry.
Originally a solo venture for the band’s singer-songwriter, Ryan Smith, Bdrmm has since expanded into a five-piece outfit currently based in Hull, East Yorkshire. Comparisons have been drawn across the board to the shoegaze troupes of the nineties, particularly Ride and Slowdive.
Perfect choice to warm up the evening.
