Michigander : Michigander

It’s an emotional time, but most of these emotions seem to be bad. Harkening back to the positive feelings of the turn-of-the-millennium has been Kalamazoo’s Jason Singer, a.k.a. Michigander, with a series of EPs over the years, and now his hopeful self-titled debut full-length.

“I’m so emotional / But I don’t know any other way” sings Singer on “Emotional”, and it is sort of the mission statement of Michigander (and seemingly Michigander as a whole). That holds true from the electronic opener “Broadcast” to the wistful closer “Hair”. There are catchy explosions of emotion such as “Emotional” and the bopping “Giving Up”, sweeter fare in “Letterman” and “Breaker Box”, swaying “Important” and “Episode”, and the brightness to “Spitting Image” and “I’ll Be Okay”, but always with Singer’s heart on his sleeve and in his music.

No matter how you feel about how things are going these days, one always needs some positive emotion in your life, and providing it is Michigander.
