There is so much electronica out there these days, mostly for the club but occasionally for the bedroom. As M83, Anthony Gonzalez instead crafts whole realms with his washing effects, like on his well-titled latest, Fantasy.
From the airy expanse of opener “Water Deep” to the slower, sadder echoing harmonies in closer “Dismemberment Bureau”, Fantasy is the kind of world-building journey you might remember from playing CD-ROM games on your PC. While there are a few standouts, such as the enlivening “Oceans Niagara”, the album is more of a single piece, glowing and washing over your, wherever you are.
Kids of the aughts (or earlier) might find today’s music scene overstuffed with electronica, but that’s because so much of it is so similar and uninteresting. Give a thought, and a listen, to an artist who’s been making special electronica since those aughts in M83 and his Fantasy.
