John Dennis : Mortal FlamesWhile classical folk and even bluegrass inspired, John Dennis, is at least trying to do something new on Mortal Flames, and why not, his previous songs from Eternities Tree or Second Wind may sound typical of an older soul, see “Sick to My Soul”, or “Mansions in Glory”, but this new release might do well to covet some happiness, given his openness on the passing of his girlfriend, and just the times in general.

Start that with the emotional, inspired, and yes overly folky, “First Light”. However, as the release wind, bends and rolls forwards, the Southern sound it embraces is more than interesting and just emotional. See “Orpheus”, “The Innocents” or intricate “Oh, Beloved”.

More so, “Board Game Money”, the title track, and “Good, Good, Love” are all reminiscing, while “Fool’s Golden Boy” or “Another Door” are outgoing sounding, the question being are they outgoing enough in the nature of his southern sound and guitar. “Mortal Flames”, “Gweneviere Part 1”, “Gweneviere Part 2”, and last number “Oh, Beloved” all seem to lead to an “ad astra ad aspara” mentality.

Overall, Mortal Flames is a mix, but a very intimate and touching one in the highpoints of guitar or obviously the lyrics, but just as a folk album in general.
