Sad music can often come off as too one-note, just the same sad song over & over again – even if it’s a great song, that’s a lot of similar sorrow. However, Canada’s Hannah Georgas varies both her sonic styles and emotional approaches to the melancholy on I’d Be Lying If I Said I Didn’t Care.
Of most immediate note is Georgas’ shifting between acoustic melodies and indietronic synth beats. Yet she can be intimate with both on Lying, from the synthesizer opener “Scratch” to the sweet loss closer “Keep Telling Yourself. In between, Georgas displays a catchier, more accepting side of desolation in singles “Better Somehow” and “Home” (QRO review).
I’d Be Lying If I Said I Didn’t Care can come off as a bit too solo and intimate, as the songs are often better the bigger they are. But Hannah Georgas knows all the colors of woe.
