The great emotional wash of post-rock is lost on some people, who either can’t handle that broad a scope or just need vocals to hook them in. Those people should check out EXITMUSIC’s debut full-length, Passage, which brings the emotion right to you.
The duo of Devon Church and Aleksa Palladino have the quiet-into-big post-rock growth down, from the titular opener of Passage to the tragedy slowly coming closer "Sparks of Light". But Palladino also adds an epic-yet-intimate vocal cry that properly evokes feelings. Mostly it is of the darker side, but "The Night" is brighter, and the more synthed "The Modern Age" carries.
When Passage gets a little too stripped to just Palladino, it can feel overwrought, but always gets its message across. Post-rock for the rest of us.
