Indie-pop is all the rage, but it can feel thin, all shine, no substance, as well as a bit of all the same, just another tune to keep you on the dancefloor. As Dayglow, Sloan Struble doesn’t reinvent the indie-pop wheel, but does deliver some great tunes for that dancefloor on his band’s self-titled release.
“Glow” does very much apply to Dayglow, from the catchy opener “Mindless Creatures” to the catchy close “Broken Bone”, bopping indie-dance that sticks in your ear and gets to your feet. If there isn’t a real standout (the closest would be “Old Friend, New Face”), and the tracks run together a bit, the album does keep its pop quality high throughout.
Yes, not the deepest record in the world, but that’s not what Dayglow is meant to be, not what you’re looking for from your new favorite indie-pop popster, who does deliver what you do want: toe-tappers.
