The music business is dead (or at least dying), as ‘insiders’ say, yet there are still many acts making not just a go of it, but a career, even in this uncertain day & age. And these aren’t just legacy artists or overnight sensations, riding the back of back when there were records or a current viral hit, but young bands putting out album after album in the twenty-first century. COIN deliver a wide set of catchy songs on I’m Not Afraid of Music Anymore.
From the building indie-pop of opener “It’s Hard To Care About Everything” onward, Anymore is distinctly an album for this century/millennium, with an electro-shine that is heartfelt. And the group brings their hooks on pieces such as “Everything”, the following bopping “Take It Or Leave It”, indie-dance “Asking For a Friend”, and more. As the album goes on, it shifts more to that felt heart-on-a-sleeve in tracks like “Blueberry Smoothie”, softer change-up “222”, low-key “Bloodtype”, and the bigger, loving “Strawberry Jam”.
At fourteen songs, there might be a bit more than one needs on I’m Not Afraid of Music Anymore, but give all that you’ve gotten in these days.
