Austin City Limits 2019 Preview

In addition to being the longest-running live music program in America, Austin City Limits also has the amazing Austin City Limits Festival, one of the country’s biggest festivals. Spanning two three-day weekends, Friday-to-Sunday on both October 4th-6th and 11th-13th, Zilker Park is the place to be:

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4th/11th

Honda Stage Tame Impala, 8:15 PM – 9:30 PM From Perth (QRO photos at a home) in Western Australia (QRO photos at a hometown festival), comes the psychedelic rock of Tame Impala (QRO live review), touring off of 2011’s Innerspeaker (QRO review), 2012’s Lonerism, and 2015’s Currents, whose critical acclaim has won them fans across the world (QRO photos at a festival), and spots headlining a ton of 2019 festivals (QRO photos headlining a recent festival), including returning to Austin City Limits (QRO photos at ACL ’15).
Lil Uzi Vert, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM Philadelphia’s Lil Uzi Vert (QRO photos at a festival) got recognition from his debut single, “Money Longer”, and some top-notch mixtapes. And in 2017 his appeared on Billboard Hot 100 single “Bad and Boujee”, by Migos. He comes to Austin City Limits in the run-up to his sophomore full-length, Eternal Awake.
King Princess, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM The latest find by big-name producer Mark Ronson is twenty-year-old Mikaela Straus, a.k.a. King Princess (QRO photos at a festival), so catch her on her king-sized couch (QRO photos at a festival).
Scarypoolparty, 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM (Weekend One) Madison Beer, 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM (Weekend Two) From being noticed on YouTube by Justin Bieber to walking the runway for Dolce & Gabbana during Milan Fashion Week, Madison Beer does As She Pleases.
Asleep at the Wheel, 12:30 PM – 1:15 PM (Weekend One) Mahalia, 12:30 PM – 1:15 PM (Weekend Two) West Virginia-born, Austin-living Asleep At the Wheel (QRO photos at an Austin festival) having been bringing western swing since 1970, racking up not only nine Grammy Awards, but have also appeared at every single Austin City Limits Festival!
Miller Lite Stage Thom Yorke, 7:00 PM – 8:15 PM In case you somehow don’t know, Thom Yorke is the frontman for Radiohead (QRO live review on Austin City Limits), the most successful and acclaimed alternative music band in the world. The musical madman you first got to know as a “Creep” led his band to blossom with such iconic gems as OK Computer, most recently with 2016’s A Moon Shaped Pool (QRO review). In 2006 he put out his solo record, The Eraser, and recruited an all-star band to tour it, as Atoms For Peace (QRO photos), and together they released Amok (QRO review) in 2013. This year has come the electronic dance Anima (QRO review), and Yorke coming to ACL (QRO photos of Radiohead at ACL ’16). But you never know what to expect from one of the great auteurs of our time.
Kaytranada, 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM Haitian by way of Montreal, Francophile DJ/producer Kaytranada comes to Texas.
Black Pistol Fire, 2:45 PM – 3:30 PM Check out the raw rock n’ roll of Austin’s own Black Pistol Fire (QRO photos at an Austin festival), who return to ACL to set things alight. Also: Houses, 1:15 PM – 2:00 PM
Vrbo Stage Jenny Lewis, 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM If you like alternative music in the twenty-first century, chances are you already know Jenny Lewis (QRO photos). The former child star came to the music scene co-fronting Los Angeles’ Rilo Kiley (QRO album review) in the prior decade (QRO photos), before going solo with Rabbit Fur Coat and 2008’s Acid Tongue (QRO review). In 2010 she teamed up with boyfriend Jonathan Rice as Jenny & Johnny (QRO photos at a festival) for I’m Having Fun Now (QRO review). For 2013, she reprised one of her many guest vocalist roles (others have included with Elvis Costello & Conor Oberst – QRO live review together) on the reunion tour of indietronica all-stars Postal Service (QRO photos) behind the tenth anniversary edition of the ultra-acclaimed Give Up (QRO review). For her own return to Austin City Limits (QRO photos at ACL ’14), however, she comes to shine all on her own (QRO photos solo at a festival), with 2014’s The Voyager (QRO review) and this year’s On the Line (QRO review).
K.Flay, 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM A musical aficionado, K.Flay (QRO photos at a festival) seems to know how to do it: producing beats, making rhymes, and playing guitar, piano, and drums. Her inexplicable catchy hooks, and beats are something least expected of a Stanford graduate but has already been deemed the ‘new best thing in hip-hop.’ This year she’s put out her third record, Solutions.
Cherry Glazerr, 2:45 PM – 3:30 PM Riot Grrrl punk has been experiencing an upswing in recent years (thankfully without Courtney Love), thanks to original acts like Los Angeles’ Cherry Glazer (QRO photos), who come to Austin City Limits behind this year’s Stuffed & Ready (QRO review).

American Express Stage Guns N’ Roses, 7:30 PM – 10:00 PM G’ N’ F’ N’ R’ – Guns n’ Fuckin’ Roses (QRO photos headlining a festival). You know them – oh yes, you know them. The biggest band to emerge from Los Angeles’ big eighties hard rock scene, G’ N’ R’ took the world by storm behind such mega-records as Appetite for Destruction and Use Your Illusion I and II, and killer singles like “Welcome To the Jungle”, “Sweet Child o’ Mine”, “Paradise City”, “November Rain”, and “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”. There wasn’t a bigger star than lead singer Axl Rose – except maybe lead guitarist Slash (QRO live review), along with ‘classic’ line-up members Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan (QRO photos at a festival), and Steven Adler. The band lived the hard rock n’ roll lifestyle to the fullest, especially Rose and his outsized ego, as basically the definition of ‘sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll’… Of course, this took its toll, with acrimony causing everyone but Rose to leave after 1993’s “The Spaghetti Incident?”. Rose found new members (QRO photos at a festival) and promised follow-up Chinese Democracy – and promised, and promised… It wasn’t until fifteen years and fourteen million dollars later that Democracy finally arrived. But even more awaited was last year’s ‘Not In This Lifetime…’ Tour, which saw Slash & McKagan rejoin Axl and embark on the second highest-grossing concert tour on record, grossing north of half a billion dollars, and now heads to rock Austin City Limits.
The Raconteurs, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM Rock star Jack White (QRO live review) came up in The White Stripes (QRO live review), and has had his team-up with Alison Mosshart as The Dead Weather (QRO album review), but perhaps most special has been The Raconteurs. Indeed, while last year’s solo record Boarding House Reach (QRO review) was everything that the haters thought it was, this year’s Raconteurs record, Help Us Stranger (QRO review), has been the comeback all the fans could dream of. They return to ACL for their first time since 2008.
Tyler Childers, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM Kentucky’s Tyler Childers (QRO photos at a festival) plays Austin City Limits, behind his U.S. Country & Folk charts topping record, Country Squire.
FIDLAR, 1:45 PM – 2:30 PM (Weekend One) The Aces, 1:45 PM – 2:30 PM (Weekend Two) Back in the long-lost eighties, punk outfits like Black Flag would prompt conflict with Commissioner Chief Daryl Gates’ pre-Rodney King LAPD – but everyone’s mellower these days, right? Honda Stage The Cure, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM If you’re going to ACL, do you seriously need to be told who The Cure (QRO photos headlining a festival) are?!? Fronted by the iconic Robert Smith, The Cure were on the leading edge of New Wave in the eighties, basically inventing goth as a form of music – and releasing some of the decade’s most catchy singles as well. You know ‘em, you love ‘em, you came to Austin City Limits for the return of The Cure (QRO photos headlining a festival).
Billie Eilish, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM Just try to catch electro-pop sensation Billie Eilish (QRO photos at a festival), who turned a lot of heads and hips with her debut single “Ocean Eyes” and EP Don’t Smile at Me, and then debuting at #1 this year with the hit When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?. Just watch out for her hoards of screaming female fans (QRO photos) as she plays bigger & bigger stages (QRO photos).
Brittany Howard, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Alabama Shakes (QRO photos at ACL ’15) energetic frontwoman Brittany Howard (QRO photos solo) this year decided to do the solo album thing with Jaime.
The Kooks, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM (Weekend One) With Inside In/Inside Out and “Naïve”, The Kooks (QRO photos) burst out of Brighton as alt-pop stars beloved by girls everywhere (QRO photos). 2008’s Konk (QRO review) kept that up, more or less, though 2011’s Junk of the Heart (QRO review) saw the band (QRO photos at a festival) get pretty simple (QRO live review), but they more or less bounced back with 2014’s Listen (QRO review) and last year’s Let’s Go Sunshine (QRO review).
Denzel Curry, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM (Weekend Two) Florida’s Denzel Curry (QRO photos) first got attention from SpaceGhostPurrp, and comes to Austin City Limits behind last year’s Ta13oo.

Miller Lite Stage James Blake, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM People seemed to start talking about ‘post-dubstep’ before dubstep was even a thing (at least in the States), in the form of highly hyped Brit James Blake (QRO live review). But the former singer of Mount Kimbie made massive waves with his self-titled debut (QRO review), so see for yourself what all the fuss is/was about (QRO photos at a big venue) as he comes back to Austin City Limits (QRO photos at a festival).
Kali Uchis, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM Karly Loaiza, a.k.a. Kali Uchis, got notice for working with Snoop Dogg, but has since graduated to her first ever headlining tour in 2017, and now comes back to Austin City Limits (QRO photos at a festival).

Vrbo Stage Metric, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM Is it wrong to resent a band for finally getting breakthrough success? That question is always at the heart of any discussion regarding Toronto based band Metric (QRO live review), as the quartet (QRO live review) has done pretty well for themselves (QRO live review). 2009’s Fantasies (QRO review) earned them a couple of Juno awards, as well as short listing for the prestigious Polaris Prize, two Canadian awards the band certainly no stranger to (QRO photos at a Canadian festival), and 2012’s Synthetica (QRO review) took them even higher, racking up Junos. While they may be one of the more mainstream acts in indie today (QRO live review), they are undeniably a charismatic take on the pop/punk genre (QRO photos at a festival), and their growing fan base (QRO live review) reflects this over and over again (QRO photos) – including playing Radio City Music Hall (QRO live review at Radio City) and more (QRO live review). Always a safe bet to tear up any stage (QRO live review), Metric (QRO photos) comes back to Austin City Limits (QRO photos at a festival) behind last year’s Art of Doubt (QRO review) and 2015’s Pagans In Vegas (QRO review). The band (QRO live review outdoors), fronted by singer/songstress extraordinaire – and your indie-rock crush – Emily Haines (QRO solo live review) is entirely capable of winning over the indie purist in all of us (QRO photos outdoors at a festival) with songs from Doubt singles “Dark Saturday” & Pagans’ “The Shade” to Synthetica’s own “Youth Without Youth” (QRO review) & team-up with Lou Reed “The Wanderlust” (QRO video with Reed), to Fantasies” “Sick Muse” (QRO video) & “Stadium Love” (QRO video), to older numbers like “Dead Disco” (QRO video), “Handshakes” (QRO video), “Help I’m Alive” (QRO video) & “Monster Hospital” (QRO video).
Natalia Lafourcade, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM One of the most successful pop/rock singers in Latin America (and well known north of the border as well), lyric soprano Natalia Lafourcade comes to Austin City Limits, behind last year’s second volume of Musas: Un Homenaje al Folclore Latinoamericano en Manos de Los Macorinos.

American Express Stage Childish Gambino, 8:00 PM – 9:30 PM The world is littered with rappers trying their hand at acting, and actors trying their hand at rapping (to say nothing of sports stars trying both) – with usually poor results. Standing out from that crowd is Childish Gambino (QRO photos), a.k.a. Donald Glover (QRO photos at a festival) of NBC’s great (but sadly cancelled) Community and now his own much acclaimed creation, FX’s Atlanta (plus young Lando Calrissian in Solo). While initial responses were lukewarm, 2016’s “Awaked, My Love!” became a commercial & critical hit, including winning a Grammy. Most recently, Glover Gambino’s (QRO photos at a festival) “This Is America” put him on the top ranks of political rappers. He comes back to Austin City Limits (QRO photos at ACL ’14), where it “Feels Like Summer”.
Gary Clark Jr., 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM Austin’s own Gary Clark Jr. (QRO photos at a festival in Austin) is the latest artist to be said to be ‘bringing blues back’ – when did it ever leave? And if it did, it’s surely come back many times since then (just look at Jack White…) – but Clark (QRO live review) is certainly keeping it going, like on Austin City Limits the program (QRO live review on ACL) and in 2015 (QRO photos at ACL ’15).
Lauren Diagle, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Successfully crossing over from contemporary Christian music to pop has be Lafayette’s Grammy-winning Lauren Daigle, who’s risen from American Idol also-ran to hit artist.
Sigrid, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM Barely old enough to drink in the States, Norway’s Sigrid (QRO photos at a festival) found international success in 2017 with single “Don’t Kill My Vibe”, and plays her second Austin City Limits in three years. Also: Flora Cash, 12:30 PM – 1:15 PM

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6th/13th

Honda Stage Cardi B, 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Weekend One) Maybe no one’s pulled off being a contemporary ‘internet celebrity’ as well as Cardi B. She rose from stripping to online fame thanks to her “no filter attitude,” including starring on VH1 reality series Love & Hip: New York. In 2017 she broke into another field, music, in another big way, with debut single “Bodak Yellow”, dubbed “the rap anthem of the summer” by the New York Times. Last year came Invasion of Privacy, which broke streaming records as it lived up to the impossible hype, including winning Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. Hell, she’s even a political player, as one of the biggest and most vocal supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders. And you know she’s gonna bring her big stage show to headline Austin City Limits.
Robyn, 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Weekend Two) Robyn (Robin Miriam Carlsson) (QRO photos at a festival) gained international fame with nineties dance-pop hits like “Show Me Love”, but then retreated to her home base of Sweden. Back-up vocals on Britney Spears’ “Piece of Me”, opening for Madonna in Europe, and being featured on Röyksopp’s Junior (QRO review) all set the stage for her three-part charting Body Talk series in 2010. More recently she had teamed up with others, such as with Röyksopp on 2014’s Do It Again and with La Bagatelle Magique with 2015’s Love Is Free. But last year she hit the big time again (QRO photos at Madison Square Garden) with the acclaimed Honey.
Third Eye Blind, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM Third Eye Blind (QRO photos) is playing Austin City Limits? Old enough to be mocked by kids in the nineties, they’re somehow still around and still leading their “Semi-Charmed Life”. Though they have been on a bit of an upswing in the last few years (QRO photos), from calling out homophobic attendees at a paid gig they did around the 2016 Republican Convention, to recruiting The Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan to help write their out-just-after-ACL Screamer.
Rosalía, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Bringing a modern interpretation of flamenco music to Lollapalooza in Barcelona’s Rosalía.
IDLES, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM Bristol’s young punks IDLES (QRO live review) – even if they don’t like that title – have had two widely acclaimed records, 2017’s Brutalism and last year’s Joy as an Act of Resistance.

Banks, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM Los Angeles’ Jillian Rose Banks (QRO photos outdoors) brings her ethereal sonics to Austin City Limits, on the back of this year’s widely successful third record, III.
Bea Miller, 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM After coming in ninth place on season two of The X Factor when she was only thirteen, Bea Miller signed to Disney’s Hollywood Records and released gold record Not an Apology. She (QRO photos) comes to Billboard Hot 100 behind last year’s follow-up Aurora.

CAAMP, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM Ohio’s CAAMP (QRO photos at a festival) make beautiful folk music, most recently on this year’s By and By.
Shura, 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM Check out the out synth-pop of Hammersmith’s Shura, who comes to Austin City Limits on the back of this summer’s Forevher.
The Japanese House, 1:15 PM – 2:00 PM (Weekend One) Buckinghamshire indie-pop artist Amber Bain is The Japanese House (QRO photos at a festival). A close friend of The 1975, she comes to Austin City Limits behind her debut full-length, this year’s Good at Falling.
Mallrat, 1:15 PM – 2:00 PM (Weekend Two) Australia’s Mallrat (QRO photos at a festival) has been hitting it big at home & abroad.

American Express Stage Mumford & Sons, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM London’s King’s College & St. Paul’s School are serving as something of the English alt-folk Wesleyan, seeing related acts hit it big. First there was Noah & The Whale, with graduates of both, then Noah’s female vocalist Laura Marling went out on her own. But the biggest hit from there has to be fellow Marling collaborator Mumford & Sons (QRO live review). Debut Sign No More saw them break through to the mainstream (QRO photos outdoors) with songs like “Little Lion Man”, and 2012’s follow-up Babel (QRO review) hit number one on the charts (QRO photos) on both sides of the Atlantic (QRO photos at a European festival). Oh, they’ve also done such feats as perform on the Grammys with Bob Dylan – and win album of the year in 2013! They also got a Grammy for their tour documentary Big Easy Express (QRO screening review), where they, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and Old Crow Medicine Show toured the southwest by train – a railroad version of their ‘Gentlemen of the Road Stopover’ tours (QRO review). And now Mumford & Sons (QRO live review) come back to Austin City Limits to headline (QRO photos at a festival), after last year’s Delta (QRO review) and 2015’s Wilder Mind (QRO review).
