Magic Man – Before the Waves

Electro-pop is very big these days, and why not? Synthesizers are now as important as guitars, disco is back in a huge way, and people need an uplift. Bringing that uplifting electro-pop is Magic Man on their debut, Before the Waves.

Magic Man first got notice thanks to single “Paris”, and that is the top song on the subsequent full-length, but also gives a good impression of the rest of the album. From the engaging electro-pop of opener “Texas” (this album also has “Chicagoland” and hidden track “South Dakota”, though it’s more a celebration of travel than geographic journey in its own right) to the brightening after the rain of closer “It All Starts Here”, Magic Man are happy on their keys. There are a few sadder songs like the relatively lower-key “Honey”, and the disco of “Every Day” is more Chromeo (QRO live review) sexy style, but it’s the electro-pop that shines through.

Before the Waves isn’t a revelation, certainly not these electro-heavy days, but is bound to brighten your electro-day.
