Singer/songwriter Lissy Trullie draws from the girl-garage well on her debut, Self-Taught Learner EP. Like other new New York acts such as Crystal Stilts (QRO album review), Vivian Girls (QRO album review), and caUSE co-MOTION! (QRO album review), Trullie looks to the rough-hewn sounds of the fifties. While she doesn’t venture that far out of her relatively simple base, it’s a sweet sound nonetheless.

Throughout Self-Taught, Trullie evokes the catchy rhythms and guitars of such artists as The Shangri-Las (best known for “Leader of the Pack” – QRO photos). Her upswings on kiss-off opener “Boy Boy” or the following “She Said” are hook-laden, while she perfects her approach in “Forget About It”, with her fifties classic stylings down pat. While generally upbeat but wise, Trullie does vary her outlook somewhat: “Money” is a sunny surf-garage that makes you smile, while the title track is more restrained, with a little wist.
Trullie does largely stick to her girl-garage script throughout Self-Taught, though the finisher, a cover of Hot Chip’s “Ready For the Floor”, shows a bigger, fuzzier sound that’s slight more indie. Hopefully it points to the direction Trullie plans to follow in her growth.
