Black Box Revelation, the curiosities of the night on Sunday, March 4th, for a sold-out crowd of what seemed mostly Jane’s Addiction (QRO live review) fans, definitely found an audience for the evening. Playing to a somewhat unsuspecting crowd this Belgian duo stomped out songs reminiscent of only the best aspects of the sixties rock ‘n’ roll era. Piquing the interest of the audience early was no problem for the two musicians with their warm and rocking sound.
Lead vocalist and guitarist Jan Paternoster, alongside drummer Dries Van Dijick, introduced the audience to their danceable, body-moving music through the solid drumming and dirty and riffy guitars. The fuzzed out songs immediately caused heads to bop to the unfamiliar and jangly tunes. Featuring several tracks from their latest release, My Perception, Black Box Revelation diversified their set with percussive additions and bluegrass inspired inflections.
Proving their winning over of the audience, the group tore into a lively version of the ballad “Sealed With Thorns”. Edging in with a steady thumping on the drums and languidly strumming chords, the song built to an immensely soul-wrenching guitar solo that had the audience howling and cheering towards the end.
Following their set at the Paramount Theatre (QRO venue review), located in Huntington, New York, Black Box Revelation continues to host the opening slot for the rest of the Jane’s Addiction tour as well as other off-dates.
