San Fermin : Arms

San Fermin have been making beautiful music for years now, but after songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone endured the dissolution of two relationships, they stripped down for Arms. While veering from indie into not just country but indeed pop-country, it’s another beautiful album by this beautiful band.

One great aspect of Arms is that singer Claire Wellin gets to the fore a great deal, including on the album’s two strongest tracks. Both “Didn’t Want You To” and “You Owe Me” are great heartbroken kiss-offs to failed relationships that evoke sad Nashville country gals. Opener/single “Weird Environment” goes more hooky in its alt-country/pop, while “Wasting on Me” sees sweet, resigned acceptance.

While hardly a pick-me-up record, instead living in the loss of failed loves, Arms brings San Fermin’s beauty to the fore.
