It’s been a big time for your favorite Canadian twins Tegan & Sara, from turning their memoir High School into a television show to Sara Quin becoming a mother. They went from their COVID lockdown Instagram livestream ‘Where Does the Good Grow?’ chats (that were mostly about gardening) to putting out new album Crybaby, a great mix of the electro-dance love anthems and sad synth-pop heartbreak.
It all starts on a very high note with “I Can’t Grow Up”, which is the kind of electro-pop explosion the might-be-past-forty-but-still-look-like-teens pair have been mastering since 2013’s Heartthrob (QRO review), not to mention the fucking great messed up life & love “Fucking Up What Matters”. Yet there’s also the sad sisters Quin beauty in pieces such as “Yellow” and “Faded Like a Feeling” (QRO review). Admittedly, the album is front-loaded in terms of quality, the back half feeling a little more straightforward, but Crybaby closes out with the slow loss of “Whatever That Was”.
You’ve already fallen in love with Tegan & Sara a million times, from “Back In Your Head” and “Everything Is Awesome” to their awesome onstage bickering banter. They may be doing more than just music these days, but they still do that great, too.
