When We Were Promised Jetpacks came up over a decade ago on Scotland’s Fat Cat Records, they were often compared to the fellow tragic countrymen/label-mates Frightened Rabbit at The Twilight Sad. Time & acts have moved on, and WWPJ have evolved without losing their sad ways – and even evoke some other great comparisons with latest, Enjoy the View.
It can be weak commentary to compare one act to another, but there are just so many excellent comparisons to be made with View. Opener “Not Me Anymore” has the higher beauty of Bon Iver. The following “Fat Chance” has a press bringing to mind The National. The atmospheric intimacy of “If It Happens” calls up Broken Social Scene. And carrying closer “Just Don’t Think About It” has the slower sadness of WWPJ’s earlier work.
Enjoy the View obviously an ironic title, as this is an album of melancholy and loss. But one can definitely Enjoy a band doing it so well.
