After their 2010 emotional self-titled debut, Young the Giant went for a more electro/disco approach on follow-up Mind over Matter (QRO review). Home of the Strange takes that approach well, and even brings in some funk.
Despite the title of the record/closing number, and opening number/first single “Amerika”, Home of the Strange is not a take on the U. S. of A., but an album that mixes cool with more electric styles. First pieces “Amerika”, “Something To Believe In”, and “Elsewhere” all get in on the cool act, relaxed, evocative, and nighttime dance floor, respectively. There are intimate moments, such as “Titus Was Born” and the natural beauty to “Nothing’s Over”, but overall the record is a pressing funky party with numbers like “Jungle Youth”, “Silvertongue”, and the title track, not to mention the more interesting experiment “Mr. Know-It-All”.

Mind over Matter did lose some of the emotional heft that first got Young the Giant notice on pieces such as “Cough Syrup” and “Your Apartment”, but now their electro sound has more fully fleshed out.
