For a while now, Alkaline Trio has been on the “backburner,” as singer/guitarist Matt Skiba said. He had a pretty big ‘other job’ as part of Blink-182. Alkaline’s drummer Derek Grant took a hiatus that turned into a permanent departure. It’s been six years since their last album, Is This Thing Cursed?. Well, the punk group are back in a strong way with Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs.
All that time away has not dulled Alkaline Trio’s style, a reliable punk that can range from political to emo with the best of them. Opener “Hot For Preacher” and the speedy “Break” deliver punk pressure, and closer “Teenage Heart” shows that Skiba can still sing about being an American teen even as he nears fifty. Meanwhile, their emotional side comes out strong with the likes of the call-to-arms-of-love “Versions of You” and evocative “Shake With Me”.
Alkaline Trio didn’t need to reinvent their sound in their return. Instead, they’ve given a great version of what has been missing.
