Wednesday night, October 4th, dance music all-star, ZHU took the city of Austin by storm showing no mercy with an unforgettable performance.

The vibes ran heavy as electronic music enthusiasts funneled into ACL Live at The Moody Theater to grab drinks and secure their spot for what was to come. The first of whom, flashing their shiny red and black VIP lanyards that matched the aesthetic of the evening. Fans chatted amongst themselves, contemplating whether they would hear all the “bangers”, make it to work in the morning and just what the dark ominous box was displayed on stage before them.

Noizu

As 8PM struck, Noizu, a headlining artist in his own right took the stage. His decks were so close to the crowd you could feel the energy leaving his raised fingertips and flowing into yours. This was a true opening performance. The “Summer 91” star played an amazingly tasteful set despite not having the set time and production he’s used to. As the usually late-night crowd began to fill out the venue, so did the tasty tech-house anthems. Fans bounced up and down out of their seats to his selects which included hits as well as a well-crafted “Intergalactic” (Beastie Boys) remix.

It was time. Red letters painted the larger than life LED wall with a premonition of what was to come. The moment the crowd was waiting for was soon to unravel. As haze filled the air, one after one silhouettes gathered on stage. Encompassed by his fellow touring musicians, draped in a blood-red coat, multi-talented artist, ZHU, stood facing away from fans, further building the evening’s suspense. The Grammy-nominated virtuoso opened up the evening  with “Take My Soul”, the first track featured on his fourth studio album Days Before Grace he released last month. Blissful, melted, entranced are a few words to describe the faces that lined the rail. Whether you were standing 20 feet away or high up in the venue’s multi-level gallery, you had the view of a lifetime. The multi-purpose production was crafted beautifully, providing a cage that harnessed his band, displayed LED visuals and held ZHU up larger-than-life. Bright heavenly beams shooting from the sides of the stage complimented the hellfire red tones of the set as movers up top guided the crowd in dance.

ZHU

After warming up the audience with some groovy tracks and tantalizing vocals, ZHU called out to Austin begging the question if they were ready to throw it back. The lights shined to capture the excitement in the air before dropping the piano riff everyone has come to love from “In the Morning”.  Fans were flowing in rhythm as they perpetuated their body to the beat. Darkness melted into light as band members took center stage trading off solos throughout the evening. ZHU joined them on keys later in the evening showcasing his incredible live performance skills. A task that a lot of electronic producers have yet to master. Throughout the evening ZHU continued to surprise fans dabbling in bass drops and renditions of rock tunes showing Austin a taste of his musical reach. As the evening winded down, the intensity of the show certainly did not. To the enjoyment of the crowd ‘the bangers’ were played one by one. Austin was left stunned in amazement once again by its beloved ZHU.
