Trampled by Turtles : Alpenglow

Much of today’s alt-country either goes the crowd-pleasing pop/rock route, or self-consciously rejects it by adopting older or more esoteric styles. Duluth’s Trampled by Turtles manage to do neither, or perhaps both, blending an authentic backwoods style with easy-to-love harmonies, like on their latest, Alpenglow.

Yes, a ‘glowing’ record, but one of those fields & farms of yesterday & far away. Alpenglow is most enjoyable when it goes upbeat, such as the finger-plucking charm of “Starting Over” or the old timey good times to “Burlesque Desert Window”, but also traffics in the sadness. Indeed, following those good “Burlesque” times is the wistful “All the Good Times Are Gone”, while singer Dave Simonett has a wry conversation with death on “A Lifetime To Find”.

Not breaking the sweet mold Trampled by Turtles have had for twenty years now, Alpenglow is both of today & yesterday.
