Nas, 7:30 PM – 8:15 PM

One of the most consistently strong rappers for more years than you realize has been Nas (QRO photos at a festival). His 1994 debut Illmatic has been consistently ranked as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time, and follow-up It Was Written made him internationally famous (as did a ten-year feud with Jay-Z). More recently, he and Damien Marley of reggae fame & family collaborated both on record & live (QRO photos together at a festival), donating all the royalties to African charities, 2020’s King’s Disease finally won his first Grammy, for Best Rap Album (QRO photos at a ’21 festival), and has followed that up with two more King’s Diseases and three Magics (QRO ’23 photos).

The-Dream, 6:00 PM – 6:45 PM

Terius Adamu Ya Gesteelde-Diamant has written for everyone from Britney Spears to Beyoncé, Justin Bieber to Jay-Z, but he’s also got his own hit career as he’s living The-Dream.

Lil Wayne & The Roots, 9:15 PM – 10:30 PM

New Orleans’ Lil Wayne (QRO photos at his own festival) joined Cash Money Records at the age of nine, and has never looked back. First as part of the southern hip-hop group Hot Boys, and later solo, Wayne has made a massive impact on music & the charts. In 2010 he released I Am Not a Human Being while serving time in jail, and in 2012 he passed Elvis Presley as the male with most entries on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (QRO photos at a Billboard festival). After finally delivering the long-delayed Tha Carter V in 2018, he followed that up Funeral in 2020, and now comes to headline The Roots Picnic with The Roots themselves, celebrating his hometown with Trombone Shorty, PJ Morton & more.

The Roots

Gunna, 7:30 PM – 8:15 PM

Best known for his collaborations with Lil Baby and Young Thug – not to mention his arrest with Young Thug on RICO charges – the trap hip-hop star is back with new hits like “FukUMean”.

Babyface, 6:00 PM – 6:45 PM

Nothing is smoother than Babyface. The acclaimed musician & producer has racked up the Grammys and the Number One hits, and is considered one of the fathers of today’s modern R&B.

Adam Blackstone, 4:45 PM – 5:30 PM

Philly’s own Adam Blackstone has been the musical director & performer for, like, everyone: Nicki Minaj, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, Eminem, Janet Jackson, Dr. Dre, and so many others who’d never be left off any other list, but his is just so packed – including Picnic’s own Jill Scott (see above) and The Roots. He comes back home for Legacy Experience, with American Idol star-made-star in her own right Fantasia and Tasha Cobbs Leonard.

Adam Blackstone

Robert Glasper featuring Yebba, 3:20 PM – 4:15 PM

Robert Glasper (QRO photos) grew up going to club dates with his mother rather than being left with a babysitter. It’s no wonder he’s grown up into the Robert Glasper Experiment (QRO photos outdoors), who won the 2012 Grammy for Best R&B Album for Black Radio, and now plays The Roots Picnic with Yebba.

Presser Stage

André 3000, 8:00 PM – 8:45 PM

As one-half of the famed OutKast (QRO photos at a festival), André 3000 brought southern rap to the wider world as he shook it like a Polaroid picture (back when Polaroids were still around). After 2006’s Idlewild, André was more active as an actor than rapper – and then last year released an honest-to-god instrumental album, including flute, New Blue Sun, so who knows what to expect at The Roots Picnic.

André 3000

Cam’ron, 6:30 PM – 7:15 PM

Over two-and-a-half decades of hits have come from New York’s East Coast hip-hop hit Cam’ron.

Wale, 5:15 PM – 6:00 PM

Since his discovery by superstar producer Mark Ronson, things have gone very well for D.C. rapper Wale (QRO photos), with mixtapes, collaborations, and even regular ol’ studio albums.
