The ability of alt-country/folk to bridge the indie/mainstream divide in this century/millennium has been great, but it has also meant a flood of successful alt-folk acts. How do you keep track of the Mumford & Sons & The Head and The Heart, how do you keep them apart? The Lumineers step out a bit more on their third release, III.
Yes, there are stripped strums on III (“Left For Denver”), and higher beauty (“My Cell”). But of particular note is the storytelling, like the touching opener “Donna” and the tragic & stark “Jimmy Sparks”. And The Lumineers don’t leave out just what you want/need from them, a lively piece about a lively woman, “Gloria”.
The Lumineers will still be one of many in their crowded-but-booming alt-folk field. But they also are at its leading edge.
