The Jesus and Mary Chain are one of the icons of the eighties new wave music movement, and helped birth the likes of noise-pop and shoegaze. But they’re also in their fortieth anniversary, and now everyone is using electronics like they pioneered. Glasgow Eyes might not be the most inspired Jesus & Mary Chain record, but it has what their fans want.

It all comes best on the opener “Venal Joy”, that synth press from the synth press masters. If the rest of the record never quite matches that, and there are not as memorably moments, what you want are some great tracks like “Joy” or the quiet/loud electro pressure “jamcod”. Notably the album ends on brighter notes with the likes of “Second of June”, “Girl 71”, and closer “Hey Lou Reid” – that lo-fi cheeky tribute matching early love-for-inspirations “The Eagles and The Beatles” (which is actually more about The Rolling Stones).

If more good than great, Glasgow Eyes is yet another good record from a singularly great band.
