The Avett Brothers : The Avett Brothers

The Avett Brothers have never shied from who they are: earnest, backwoods country troubadours with their hearts on their sleeves. Yes, the earnestness is obvious, the hearts out there in front of them, but the sweetness shines through, like on their self-titled latest.

After the more overt politics of 2019’s Closer Than Together (QRO review), The Avett Brothers returns to their straightforward country emotionalism. The best is when they go up-tempo and down-home on the bopping “Love of a Girl” and extremely appealing “Country Kid” – while the whole record couldn’t be this way, one does wish for a few more of these, a few less of the up-front earnest sweetness that can verge into the sickly. Yet even there, one knows this is 100% Avett, no city slicker filters.

Avett Brothers fans love the band as much for who they are as the music they make, unabashedly honest to the point of corniness about what they feel, and not afraid to hide it. And that fittingly continues on The Avett Brothers.
