Sad girl pop still feels very new to anyone old enough to rent a car, but it’s already delivered us offshoots and variations, from sad girl rock to sad girls synths. Combining all of those is Utah’s The Aces, who embrace their romantic, heartbroken age and style on I’ve Loved You For So Long.
Loved is littered with upbeat songs about crushing emotions. Yes, there are pieces about loves lost such as “Person”, but also great bopping, even peppy music about “Girls Make Me Wanna Die”. Indeed, they explore the “Suburban Blues” with bigger rock, while the album ends with the young pop of “Younger” – though if you’re not Gen Z, it will make you feel geriatric hearing about being ‘old’ at age twenty-five…
Note that you don’t have to be Gen Z, or gender XX, to both enjoy and be moved by The Aces. They speak to universal themes and sounds, through their own way, on I’ve Loved You For So Long.
