Caribou’s high-energy psych-rock experience was all the tiny Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA could hold.  On an unseasonably warm Friday night in October, the four-piece crammed themselves on the meager stage and unleashed a trippy, A/V blast from the past that flipped just about everybody’s switch.

Touring in support of their new record, Andorra (QRO Review), the Canadians pushed as much of the full-bodied 60’s psych sound out of their dozen-plus instruments.   The stage was covered by four guys with two drum kits, several guitars, a few keyboards, and a giant video backdrop on which a multitude of acid-inspired graphics accompanied the music.   Head man Dan Snaith manned the controls, playing synth, singing, drumming, among other things.

Early in the set, they ripped through the pounding, swirling "Sandy" and their velvety single "She’s The One".  Later, they whipped through Andorra‘s opener, "Melody Day", with older tracks interspersed around it.  Thanks to the visuals and relatively little chatter, the whole show felt a little surreal.  The band enveloped the Middle East Upstairs in a fog, and before they knew it, they came back for a short encore that included "A Final Warning".  All in all, a totally successful excursion into some other dimension.
