Queens of the Stone Age : In Times New Roman...

Queens of the Stone Age have long been one of those stadium-filling, big-name, professional outfits who know how to deliver the exact rock n’ roll that their fans want. If this has limited their sonic growth, so be it. Yet new album In Times New Roman… takes something of a curve, trading in their catchier, more anthemistic styles for a rougher back road.

Instead of speeding down the fast tarmac highways, Queens of the Stone Age decide to take their vehicles onto gravel and even off-road entirely with songs such as the opener “Obscenery” or “Emotion Sickness”. There are moments of the strutting QOTSA of old in “Paper Machete”, the pressing “What the Peephole Say”, and the slyer “Time & Place”, but those are the outliers this time. The album ends with the nine-plus minute “Straight Jacket Fitting”, that delivers not only a road-rock procession, but also a bonus acoustic detour to finish.

Maybe Queens of the Stone Age fans just want more of their more polished recent material, but instead the band has gone in reverse, channeling their rawer earlier days of their long road trip.
