Punk rock doesn’t have to just be angry. It can also be fun – it can even be both. Too often punk gets restricted, even by its own fans, punker-than-thous demanding righteous anger – or pop-punks wanting only the catch. Massachusetts punks Potty Mouth manage to do both on their sophomore record, SNAFU.
So yes, there is the catchy indie-punk of such songs as “Do It Again” and the feminist call “Dog Song”. But there’s also punk rock kiss-offs in back-to-back “Liar” and “Fence Walker”, plus a more resigned closer “Bottom Feeder”. There’s even a punk ode to their state, “Massachusetts” – and a song about getting old & not wanting to, but in no way is “22” old…
Potty Mouth is a straightforward punk band, no subtle tones or intricate guitar solos. But they can be angry and they can be fun.
