Phoebe Go : Marmalade

Sad girl pop has stormed the charts & our hearts, yet we’re still finding more. Yes, there are artists who feel like clones, but it’s been notable have relatively few of those that there have been, and how many feel authentically ‘sad girl’ all on their own. Yes, Phoebe Go may bring to mind other current artists & styles, but she shows her heart on Marmalade.

And this is a very sad record, seemingly every song about heartbreak, about struggling with the end of relationships. “Something You Were Trying” perhaps does it best, both sonically and in actually saying goodbye (not quite a kiss-off, but not all mope, either). Marmalade closes with the sweet, intimate sway of “Rainbow Hotel”, and if it brings to mind that ‘other’ sad girl Phoebe, it’s in the best of ways.

There are very good reasons that sad girl pop has become so popular, from girls finally being allowed to express all of themselves to the universality of sadness. Open up some Marmalade for Phoebe Go.
