of Montreal : Lady On the Cusp

Kevin Barnes has long been hard to keep up with, from his prolific releases as of Montreal, to his eccentric sonic style drawing in all styles. He left longtime home Atlanta for Vermont, but he’s still appealingly all over the place as Lady On the Cusp.

That musical mish-mash is best exemplified in the opener “Music Hurts the Head”, which also has killer Barnes like, “Rock n’ roll is dead / That’s why it’s cool.” There are times when Barnes plays it relatively straighter, in a neo-sixties style with the light psychedelia of “Rude Girl on Rotation” or the piano-party “Soporific Call”, but the album is more about going everywhere, all at once, whether in jazz formation (“Sea Mines That Mr. Gone”), tech (“PI$$ PI$$”), funk (“Yung Hearts Bleed Free”) and more.

Kevin Barnes’ bewildering manner is an acquired taste, to say the least, but easier to acquire thanks to his innate, wry charm (he brings irony with “2 Depressed 2 Fuck”). Just relax and let him take you anywhere & everywhere.
