Northern Florida’s given the world a lot of punk, some of it good, some of it not so much, but on the more positive side is Against Me! (QRO photos). Fronted by Tom Gabel (QRO interview), Against Me! (QRO photos) successfully made the jump to major label without losing their edge on 2010’s White Crosses (QRO review). They did make major news in 2012 when Gabel announced that he was transgender, and undergoing the process of transition to becoming a woman, Laura Jane Grace. Yet the group (QRO spotlight on– which also left the majors and started their own label for that year’s Transgender Dysphoria Blues – QRO review) has continued to rock (QRO photos), and come to Northside (QRO photos at a festival).

Yes, the ‘biggest indie-rock band outta Boise, Idaho’, Built To Spill (QRO photos at a festival), is still around, still on Warner Bros., and still putting out new music (QRO live review), just releasing Untethered Moon. They’ve gained a second life on the festival circuit (QRO photos at a festival) – and have been moving up the festival food chain (QRO photos headlining a festival).
Los Angeles’ Best Coast (QRO live review) is a practical veteran at the still-new garage-scene (QRO photos at a festival), but a goodie (QRO photos at a festival), combining surf, garage, indie, and pop for a sound (QRO photos) that’s sure to be sweet coming from frontwoman Bethany Cosentino (QRO live review) outdoors (QRO photos outdoors). Brooklyn Live
7:00 PM – Vince Staples
7:45 PM – Sleigh Bells
8:45 PM – Run the Jewels
Somewhere between noise and pop lies Brooklyn’s Sleigh Bells (QRO photos at a festival). The duo of Derek E. Miller & Alexis Krauss (QRO photos) all of a sudden became the hottest thing out there with debut Treats, including touring with M.I.A. (QRO photos) – and they’ve kept up the heat (QRO live review) in 2012 with Reign of Terror (QRO review), 2013’s Bitter Rivals, and their bigger-and-bigger headline dates (QRO live review).
El-P blew up the Brooklyn rap scene with 2013’s Cancer 4 Cure (QRO review of release party), and brought about his team-up with Killer Mike (QRO photos at a festival) for 2012’s ‘Into the Wild’ tour. Mike & P have deepened that connection, working together as Run the Jewels (QRO photos at a festival) for two critically acclaimed records, most recently last year’s Run the Jewels 2, with word of 3 already in the works.

7:30 PM – K. Flay
A musical aficionado, K. Flay (QRO photos at a festival) seems to know how to do it: producing beats, making rhymes, and playing guitar, piano, and drums. Her inexplicable catchy hooks, and beats are something least expected of a Stanford graduate but has already been deemed the ‘new best thing in hip-hop.’ Last year she’s moved up from mixtapes to her first proper full-length, My Life As a Dog

10:30 PM – Sun Ra Arkestra
Modern music wouldn’t be where it is today without Sun Ra. Born before the start of the Great War, Sun Ra took the jazz of the fifties into the future & farther, including outer space. From paving the interstellar highway for everyone from Spiritualized (QRO live review) to Parliament/Funkadelic (QRO live review) to afrofuturism to being one of the first musicians in any genre to use electronic keyboards, there might not be anyone as singular & influential as Sun Ra.
Ra passed away in 1993, but his Arkestra has continued, now under the leadership of the sprightly 90-year-old alto saxophonist Marshall Allen.

9:15 PM – Blanck Mass
10:45 PM – Zola Jesus
Goth-chill is very big these days, including acts like the blowing up Zola Jesus (QRO photos at a festival). Fronted by the haunting Niki Roza Danilova, they seriously impressed with 2011’s Conatus (QRO review), 2013’s Versions, and last year’s Taiga. They are, however, better suited for playing indoor classy places like museums (QRO photos at The Guggenheim), but hopefully Warsaw will be high-class enough.
Here’s a handy map of all the participating venues:
