Singer/songwriter Matt Pond has retired & unretired his ‘Matt Pond PA’ so many times, it’s no surprise that, despite having recently founded a new group, The Natural Lines, he’s now returned to PA (not literally, as he hasn’t lived there in a few decades). Teaming up with Alexa Rose, his once-and-forever group’s emotional pop shines on Call and Response EP.
At only five tracks, this is not some big return, but a nice reminder of Matt Pond PA’s ways. Opener “Imagining Everything” is his signature strong brand of power-pop, while “Side Eye Rolls” showcases his wryer side. There’s a stripped-down cover of The Verve classic “Bitter Sweet Symphony”, while it ends by giving Rose more of a profile, in the slower duet touch of “Halloween Two” and her on lead with the country gal “St. Lou”.
Who knows if Call and Response means that Matt Pond is fully back in PA, or just another toe-dip in that Pond. But it is another great release from a great musician, whatever his name is.
