Man Man : Carrot On Strings

Philadelphia-born Man Man has changed since their early many-member ‘Viking Vaudeville’ craziness, now focused on main Man Honus Honus. He even moved to Los Angeles to record their latest, Carrot On Strings, and while some of those changes (such as location) poke through, this is still the wild Man Man you remember.

The building dance of opener “Iguana” is a great scene-setter, straddling both the old Man Man and new, and it goes into the very funny earworm about being stuck at a terrible party, “Cryptoad”. If it and the slow “Mulholland Drive” very much feel like ‘someone who moved to Los Angeles and now talks about it like you’re as interested in Los Angeles as he is’ (a bit akin to the crypto ear-chewing in “Cryptoad”), so be it. And there’s still all-over-the-place Man Man with the titular instrumental and extended closer “Odyssey”, plus left field curveball swaying twang trot “Cherry Cowboy” to show that Man Man can still surprise.

So many acts leave their hometowns, leave their other members, and lose what made them great in the first place. Or they ossify into a relic of themselves. Man might have gone a bit L.A., but Man is still crazy with Carrot On Strings.
