After the sad sexiness – or sexy sadness – of 2018’s so sad so sexy (QRO review), it was no surprise that Lykke Li decided to turn inward, strip things down for the next album (plus, you know, the isolation of a worldwide pandemic). So, if Eyeye isn’t the big, sensual heartbreak that you love from Lykke Li, it’s instead intimate & alone Lykke Li.
Eyeye begins on the stripped & sad side with “No Hotel” and the stark echo of “You Don’t Go Away”, before slowly moving into a more electronic vein with synths & sounds. That reaches its peak on “5D”, whose broken heart comes with just the right level of electronica. Loneliness dominates the wiser and more resigned penultimate “Over”, before the grander sad finish of “Ü&I” (which has its own epilogue of quiet sounds).
You already were in love with Lykke Li, you already knew she was so sad and so sexy. Now get to know her up-close & intimate, eye to Eyeye.
