Langhorne Slim’s long been an authentic country-folk troubadour, with a slew of great records under his belt. He also has leaned, at times, into the more simplistic ways, ditties over epics. After enduring a harrowing personal 2019 of depression & pill abuse, leading into the world’s own harrowing COVID 2020, Slim got back into the game and has produced the sweetly personal Strawberry Mansion, where he plays those ditties well.
With 19 songs, but only 45 minutes, Mansion is littered with short pieces, and really all the better for it. Slim is able to get his point & his tune across quickly & easily, from the call to action “Dream” (“It’s only a dream if you stay asleep”) to kiss-off towards the hollow wealthy in “Blood On Yer Lips”. With almost twenty tracks, not every song is going to be as great as the likes of the good life “Alright To Hide” or the country-trot upbeat “Panic Attack”, but then there’s another one to enjoy.
Hopefully Langhorne Slim’s 2021 is going to be better (pretty much has to be), as Strawberry Mansion is a sweet place to be.
