Kings of Leon : Can We Please Have Fun

Just like the nineties acts before them, the alt-rock bands of the aughts are now moving into their comfortable veteran age, putting out new records that aren’t going to storm the kids or the hipsters, but always well-received by their loyal fanbases. It’s called being ‘dad-rock’. Kings of Leon deliver their building southern-flavored alt-rock again in Can We Please Have Fun.

All the Kings of Leon hallmarks are here, starting with the growing heartbreak rock of opener “Ballerina Radio” to the emerging sadness of closer “Seen”. There’s their bigger call-out “Nothing To Do”, and their pressing uplift “Hesitation Gen”. Things even get twanged down home with the muscle car “Mustang”.

‘Dad-rock’ originated as an insult, but has since become a hallmark of success – a band has to be around long enough for their fans to become dads, has to have released enough great music over that long lifespan. Like Kings of Leon with Can We Please Have Fun.
