Kim Deal : Nobody Loves You More

While Kim Deal made her own name outside of her work with Pixies long ago with 1993’s seminal Last Splash fronting The Breeders (QRO live review playing Last Splash), that Splash has hung over everything else she’s done since, as other Breeders records, including in this century/millennium’s reunion, have paled in comparison. So, it makes some sense for her to try a full solo album, and while Nobody Loves You More is no Splash, it better shows her abilities.

Of note is that Deal can really range in sonic style on Nobody, from the sweet & touching titular opener to the cheery with horns following “Coast”. There’s a more Pixies/Breeders-esque quiet/loud indie-rocker in “Disobedience”, but also orchestral sweep to “Summerland”. Unfortunately, this does also mean the reappearance of the teched (“Crystal Breath”) and harder (“Big Ben Beat”) material that has marred post-reunion Breeders.

All the alternative music acts of the eighties & nineties have struggled to get out of the shadow of their great past in this reunion-friendly era, but Kim Deal takes a step on her own in Nobody Loves You More.
